Getting the Wheeling Fever
whaoh....so im talking to darin, and make mention of my s#itty gas mileage, no performance (this, while im putting in a new crank gear to advance timing) engine, and he asks about my 02 sensor. i tell him i have a new one, a bosch, and he proceeds to tell me that that is my problem. darin, you suck . anyways, my idea is to plug up the bungelo at the pipes (its right where all the pipes merge), then throw a new bungelo past the collector pipes, where i can stick the sensors read area actually INTO the exhaust flow. anyone done anything like this, thought of doing this? thanks for any input.

well, the location of the O? should be relevant to the original location. if the O? was in the manifold then it needs the higher temp to run properly, if placed in the down stream location it will misinterpret the readings and will not run right. if the original was in the connector pipe then yes put it back in the connector. the part# for each location is differant for each O?. I learned all about this from my missed shipped LCE header with two O? bungs. and yes some kalifornication even have two O? sensors.
also get a ND or NGK sensor, that bosch will give you nothing butt problems............Karl

Ive never sucked....suckled yes, other things yes...but sucked no. Just to give you an idea of what I was talking about the other night. Here is a picture showing the replacement Bosch O2 sensor that is spec'd for your engine. [Linked Image]

Notice how short the actual sensor pickup is that would be inside the pipe? I mean, if there is any kind of riser between the pipe and the flange, the crystal thing would never get a reading from the exhuast flow. The more free flowing the exhuast...the worse the situation gets.

And this is a picture of the Stock Denso O2 sensor that is intended for your engine:
[Linked Image]

Notice how much longer the sensor area below the flange is? Still, if mounted up off the pipe so far that its not in the flow of the exhuast gases then its not gonna be able to do its job.

Also in order for these things to function as designed, they must first be heated by the exhaust gases before they can send proper signals to the ECU. 88' and later used a heated 4wire O2 sensor allowing them to placed farther down the system under the cab. The earlier ones were in the manifold for a reason...so they wouldnt get cold feetsies!

Dont even attempt it, your ECU isnt programmed for it, and the truck aint wired for it. Your best bet would be to verify just how far into the pipe your O2 is reaching. Can pull your bosch outta the flange and measure the length of the sensor area..can compare it to what the Stock units length is....approx. 1-1/4"...hard to tell since I was measuring the old one thats burned up purdy goot.

Also double check my thoughts on the whole subject, I wont be offended... GOD knows Ive been wrong before and surely will be again. But last I checked, if the sensor aint in the flow then its not gonna send the proper information to the ECU. Think of it like this...gonna take a leak, you have the right parts, your in the right room, walk up the sink and let her flow. Oooops....everything was right except for your position and aim. Now ya got a mess to explain.

I'd like to do some more research on this and find out why some people can run without O2s, others have no problems and yet still others with same setups are running like chit.

Your extreme rich condition points so hard at O2 issues so much that...well I wont go there. LOL Sorry. But a cold O2 sending lean signals to the ECU results in poor over-richened mixture and tremendous loss in mileage per gallon.

ive got a heddman header too, and with the 02 sensor location, there is no way the bosch is sticking into the stream at all, i got an ntk/ngk from sparkplugs.com that is identical to the oem one. im getting ~20 mpg highway.

if you want to just work on the bung, i would just cut it down flush with the header so the o2 sensor actually sticks into the stream rather than relocate it.
