I'm installing a set of 5.71 gears.. I know I knsow thay are week but with my auto trans and 35's I don't have much of an option.. Anyway the old bolts and the new bolts are 20mm long, the flange on my Detroit is at lest 15-16mm thick. so the bolts only screw in about 3 turns.. I called Randys and All Pro. nether have ever heard of this.. I was wondering if the kits used with the V6 spacer have longer bolts.

Does anybody know were I can get a 11mmx25-30mmx1.0 bolt ??? I already tried e-fastener.com ... no luck..

thanks,
RAZZ

something doesn't sound normal....I have installed gears on Detroit Soft Lockers and had mucho thread engagement. Can you take some close up clear pics?

ps---you don't, by chance, have an old 1980's set of 571's that have the spacer ring?

Gear set is brand new... It's not the gears, the flange on my Detroit is defiantly thicker than the flange on the stock carrier. I've had the 4.88 for a few years and I had the same problem , but it was on of those things... "I'll fix that later".. well I never fixed it. but know I'd like to. 11mm bolts don't seam to be very common ..

thanks for your input,
RAZZ

Just looked at a V6 bolt. It's 1 1/16" long end to end. The shank portion is 3/4". I didn't have a ruler with mm. You are welcome to the have set sitting unused in my garage if they can help you but I suspect they are the same as yours.

I don't know Razz...you have something strange going on there and it seems to be that locker....any info on it? I measured some 4 cylinder ring bolts and I measure .795"(20mm) similar to sid's measurement.

Hey thanks Sid but it does sound like the same bolts I have in my hand now.. Does you V6 use a spacer between the ring gear and the carrier??

ZUK, this is what i can tell you about the locker. I found this thing at a junk yard about 7 years ago they were using it(complete third member) as a doorstop. picked it up for $75!!! So I really don't know if it a Detroit or not.. It does replace the entire carrier, it splits in half at the ring gear flange and is held together with three screws, and has a bunch of gears, cogs and two large (3"-4" Dia) springs inside.

Dunno for sure what it is but it does lock and unlock, has a considerable amount of backlash but is fairly quite when turning sharp corners..

Thanks guys!

Nope. No spacer. I thought of using one for my Supra LSD swap, but didn't need one after all. Sorry.

sounds like you have had the case apart? You might not have a locker.....maybe a true-trac or maybe a Gleason? needs some clear close-up pics to help you more.

It's defiantly a locker.. I have a tru trac up front That comes apart too but it has six little gears and 2 bigger side gears..

I spent most of the day on the phone with several companies.. this is what they had to say:

Me. hi I'm working on a Toyota 8" diff I have what I am suspecting is a Detroit locker but the flange where the ring gear bolts to is thicker than the stock carrier flange so my ring gear bolts only screw in about 3 turn, I'm looking for bolts that are 1mmx25mmx1.0 can you help me out??

Reider Racing " Wow never heard of if it's a Detroit call them maybe they can help you out"

Traclock inc.( Detroit) "Yea I remember that locker we changed that design a yeas ago because we couldn't get bolts for it.. try DTS.

DTS "I remember that locker, Detroit changed the design to solve that problem.. we no longer stock the bolts for that locker but try Suburban bolt Co in Roseville. When we need bolts that where we get them from".

Suburban Bolt Co "11mm nope we have never heard of a 11mm bolt I have 10mm and 11mm both in the length and thread pitch you need"... Gee thanks for telling me what you have that won't fit my truck"!!

4wheel Parts.. "Yea I remember that locker seamed like that changed the design just so they could use the oem bolts.. I remember selling that locker when i used to work for Downy Off Road.. give em a call tell them I sent you.. ask for (can't remember his name or read my notes any more so we'll just call him Kip)

Downy Off Road "sorry bro we don't sell the Detroit locker." Dunno what that was all about but that was their awnser to help sove my problem..

WCOR.. This guy very eager to help me but I couldn't understand his broken English..

So I'm thinking about drilling out the holes and re tapping them to accept a 12mmx1.25tpi bolt I'm sure I can handle the drilling with my press but taping the ring gear...eeeeeshhhhh I bet that metal is as hard as the tap i will be using.. I also thought about taking a 4 inch 7/16 grade8 bolt and cutting off the threads and cutting the treads on my lathe (no 11mmx1.0 tap available) but cut thread are never as strong as rolled threads..

So here's my proposal.. I will pay $10 finders fee via paypal to the first person that can find these bolts for me

thanks
RAZZ

AAA Metric Supply in Denver.

They probably have what you need in stock. If not I'm sure they'll get it.
