Oil Leak... [was : Oil Pressure!] #430545 04/06/04 04:22 PM

My truck is losing oil, not fast, but apparently spraying from some place near the oil filter. After wiping it up and watching it a couple of days, I decided to try replacing the oil pressure sender because it seemed to be at the epicenter of the mess. I put the new one in this morning and immediately my oil pressure guage started reading "normal", as in "normal" for other vehicles - not the "low normal" we're used to. Before it warmed up it stayed near the second mark, after that it stayed near the middle of the range. Then I noticed by the end of my 20 minute drive to work it was back to "low normal"... Oh well.

I'm still not sure if that fixed my oil leak, I'll wait a couple of days before deciding on that. Anybody else ever have a leak there?

Scott

Yeah, I had the sender replaced on my first T by the dealership, because I didn't believe that it always read "low normal." Well, for awhile it read normal but it quickly reverted to the "low normal" we have all grown accustomed to.

My other vehicle is a jeep. No funny comments now. Anyway the diaphragm inside the oil pressure sending unit broke. This caused oil to weep out thru the back of the electrical connector. Something I was not expecting.

A friend of mine had her oil pressure unit give out in her 93 pickup. Just gave way and pumped all the oil out. It ruined the engine before she could shut it off. . Good thing you got it early, if that was the problem.

I'm not *sure* that was the problem - there looks to be some more fresh oil in that area today. There is oil on the underside of my alternator, oil filter, and it has dripped on every thing below and behind (oil pan, cross member, steering rack). I think when it is leaking, probably while under power and the pressure is up, it is spraying *up* from somewhere *below*. Any ideas if it is not the sender and my oil filter is on tight? It's not going fast, not noticeable on the dip stick at fill ups, but maybe a half quart by oil change time.

I'm not used to my driveway having oil spots since I traded that Chevy in oh those many years ago...

Have you checked the oil filter itself? On rare occasions I have seen the rubber seal partially detach when it is screwed on too tight or if there is debris or some of the seal from the last filter left on there. The seams could be leaking on it too. Just a guess. You also should have an oil cooler with a line to it but that is further back.

I noticed the leak before the last oil change and it continued after that. I think it has slowed with the replacement of the sender, but I'm pretty sure it has not stopped (new oil where I cleaned up).

First thing I checked was the filter. About a year ago, I had quite an oil leak at the filter - I could only get it to stop with an extra half turn of the filter. I use Toyota filters almost exclusively, with an occasional Purolator thrown in - I think the one I was using at that time was a Toy filter. Anyone else find that the Toyota filters need a little more tightening than those with a solid rubber gasket?

Where I'm finding the oil is forward of the oil cooler, but I'll take another look at that.

Cam seals were replaced at timing belt replacement about 10K ago.

Crank seals, I dunno...
