Speedo Recal--Is my understanding correct? #438652 04/21/04 02:22 AM

OK, Checked the archives came up with this: I upgraded my tires from stock 245/70X16 to 255/85X16. This equates to about a 12% speed correction e.g. speedo reads 70 mph, acutal is 78.4 mph. I have 19 tooth count on a 6-18 gear. To get back to a normal reading I need to drop two teeth, i.e., 17 teeth. BUT, (here is the rub) I can only drop 1 tooth. Is this correct?

Sadly I had to get rid of my 1996 Trooper 3.2L due to a rusted frame.

Finn,

just get one of those speedo-correction things, you can buy them at most offroad stores... if I could only remember the name of it

it'll come to me, soon enough

Edit: 2 min later .... click here

How the heck do you figure that out?

I would like to figure it out on mine. Im sure there is quite a bit of difference LOL

OH And, since we are on this. You put bigger tires on. It makes your speedometer read SLOWER right? Your actually going faster than what it says? I mean, I know he just said that basically, but I want to be double sure LOL

Sorry, but that won't work on ours. Ours are cable driven and not electronic so that won't be able to help us. Would be nice though.

Santi,

So where do I put this electronic device?

It won't work. That is only for electronic speedometers. Yours is driven off a cable. There's no way it will work. The only way to compensate for it is to change the speedometer gears. Or, do like I do and use a GPS for your speedometer.
