what are the differences between the 2.4L and the 2.7L? can 2WD tacomas be fitted with the 2.7L?

alfio 8 HP and a bit more torque. I have the 2.7L in my Pre Runner.

alfio the 2.4 and 2.7 are basically the same engine, the 2.7 has the same bore but longer stroke, and the 2.7 has balance shafts, theres no reason why a 2.7 couldn't be put in a 2wd non prerunner

alfio the 2.4 and 2.7 are basically the same engine, the 2.7 has the same bore but longer stroke, and the 2.7 has balance shafts, theres no reason why a 2.7 couldn't be put in a 2wd non prerunner are the heads the same? intake/exhaust manifold, wiring harness, smog crap all pretty similar? thanks alfio

The 2.7l has some kind of distributorless ignition system. I guess this means it doesn't use traditional spark plug wires? Anyone?

What it doesn't usse is the traditional distributor older engines use to control the advancing and retarding of the spark timing. Instead the 2.7 has an ignition coil for each cylinder and a computer controls when to fire the spark depending on conditions such as air density to prevent the engine from pre-detenating.

My 96 has the 2.7 with a distributor and spark plug wires but the coil is built into the distributor. According to Consumer Guide, they switched the ignition and fuel injection systems in 97.
