I tow my 4500lb 4Runner a few times a year, and hate wrapping the straps around the frame. Not being a welder, I'm trying to come up with a mount point that's strong and doesn't require welding. What do you think of using a u-bolt (NAPA 5/8" x 1.75" x 8") through the trailer frame like this: The trailer is a 7000lb PJ. Assuming the straps/chains are strong enough, will this keep the 4Runner on the trailer if I t-bone a bus load of nuns at 70mph? Mark

picture didnt work buttt....
you know how they hook cars/trucks to flat bed tow trucks?
they have two hooks on chains, the hooks latch around the rear axle. then they hook another hook attached to the winch on the truck to the front axle and winch it forward.
could you do this with the hooks and maybe a come-along or buy a cheapy winch from harbor freight?? it must be strong becaue those tow truck guys fly and i have never heard of a car/truck coming off of one.
00 tacoma 4x4 ex-cab stock 193,000 and counting
85 long bed pickup 4x4 frame off restoration. rear lock rite 31's 268,000 miles
51 cj3a stock everything orginal 2500 original miles

Sorry for those of you who couldn't see the image - I host my site out of the house, and had firewall problems earlier this evening.
Other thoughts?

I got the image fine. Nice depiction, by the way.
Use Nyloc nuts and fabricate the sleeves from 3/4 or 1" steel pipe cut real square.
Forget shorting the sleeves where they contact the wood trailer deck. Instead bore thru the wood so that the sleeves are metal to metal against both top and bottom frame rails.

In addition to sleeving stright to metal on both ends I'd spend a few extra pennies and use grade 8 washers on both ends of the sleeve. Should work fine as long as you have enough space under the ubolt for your strap. I'd consider getting a proper strap down point and mounting it using two big bolts sleeved as you describe.
