well I finally solved the console/cupholder dilema. I have an 84 pickup that I drive everyday. It has bucket seats and I was always disappointed with the console and hated not having a cup holder. So here's the solution I used. I got an oak colored gear shift surround (I'm changing the int. color and components to "oak") with the built in cup holder out of a 96 benchseat taco. It bolts right up to the standard mounts. then I got a three piece console out of an 89 4runner (it was grey but I sprayed it to match the "oak" color exactly). The cool thing about these is that they are alot like the consoles found in the 2001+ tacos with the two storage areas and they actually are high enough to be comfortable to rest one's elbow on. the arm rest was pretty haggard so I mated a leather "oak" arm rest from a totaled 97 4runner limited. It all bolted right up to the standard mounting holes. I took my time and it looks like it came from toyota like that. The other cool thing is that the console has a component(If i decide to use it) with three switch openings two for e-lockers one for lights (future projects were I to keep the truck.....which I'm not ) I just want the next owner to be able to enjoy this truck and be proud to own it. I'm also painting it with a two stage anthracite (toyota color 1998) scheme, but that's a subject for a different post...

I put a 1999 Taco Xtracab 5 speed 4x4 shifter boot and the plastic frame its attached to in my 1988 4runner. This part has 2 cupholders built into the passenger side- one cupholder thingy that slides back and makes room for 2 if needed.

I had to cut a little bit of plastic where it meets the transmission hump with a utility knife, but otherwise it looks like it was always there.

Really nice to have 2 cupholders now.

AFAIK, this part only came on 1998 and later Tacos, and only on the Xtracabs. If you want the boot to fit right it has to be a 4 x4 manual.

I'd love to post pics but I have'nt taken the time to find out how to post images directly to the board. It seems to be different than other boards I visit. I'd be glad to E-mail pics to any one who sends me contact info. If I get a chance I'll try to figure out how to post them right up here. Or some one can PM me with step by step instuctions for dummies.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that the spring loaded coin dispenser from a 2000 tundra mounts so nicely in this set-up; no screws, nails, glue, tape, blood, sweat or tears needed! You should see it

If you want to email me the pics, I'll post them. The only real issue is a host, then you just point the message to the picture and it appears on the forum.

Thanks for bringing back to the top. I need cup holders desperately!

I work for Nissan, and have 'adapted' a center console lid from an Altima to the center storage area of stocker bench seat. Looks ok, but nothing spectacular, and still no cupholders.
