Getting the Wheeling Fever
To all the tranny experts. Does anyone know if the gears and bearings in 2WD 5spd will fit in a 4X4 5spd. It seams I have quite a growl in all my gears except 4th and reverse. I have an extra 2wd tranny for parts if they will work.

Thanks Willie <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I am pretty sure that the output shaft is shorter on the 4WD tranny.

I have seen the shaft on a 2wd cut down to fit, but it has a limeted amount of splines engauged.

Make sure they both have the mount for a hydralic clutch. Some pickups used a cable clutch.

Early five speeds in the pickups used very difernat gears.

Other than that most parts should swap. Preferance should be given to use synrchros from the newer trans since they were often upgraded.

but growling in all geared ratios (4's direct)
is probably a countershaft problem-
and those bearings aren't very expensive (or hard) to replace.
If it was me, I'd spend the $50 on the 2 bearings and improved rear retainer, and just re- bearing it.
If, of course, the rest of the box is ok...

fwiw,
