My truck has developed a high pitched noise that sounds
like the noise you might hear on your stereo speakers
if you didn't have a RF filter. The noise seems to
follow the speed of the motor and as best I can tell
it's coming from the alternator. It's still putting out
13.8v to the battery at this point but I'm curious
what would be causing the sound and how long I should
expect it to last now? I should note that I recently
replaced the drive belts. Thanks for any clues.

Regards,
Indy

Just for giggles, can you remove the alt. belt, start it up for a few, and see if the noise still persists? That will at least rule out alt/belt.

Yeah,I was thinking I'd try that tonight just to
see what happens. BTW I've been reading my FSM
and you gotta' drain the what (!) and remove the
what (!) to get that sucker out of there?! Those
Toyota engineers don't make it too easy on us
do they?

Indy

Don't know. Got me. I don't have a FSM, but I can loosen an alternator, and pull the belt without doing all that other nonsense. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/coolg.gif" alt="" />

The belt is easy...but if the unit itself has to be
removed it entails draining the radiator and removing
the bottom hose. Not too tough, just time consuming.

Well, I tried removing the drive belt from the alt. &
PS one at a time to see if the noise changes...no
change. I haven't driven my truck in a couple weeks,
so maybe I've just forgotten what it's supposed to
sound like. Guess I'll put this one in the 'if it aint
broke quit messin' with it' file for now and just keep
an ear on it.

Indy

If you do have to remove the alt, you don't have to drain the coolant.
I unbolted my PS pump and kinda twisted/moved it out of the way, and I was able to take tha alt out from the top.
I don't have A/C, so I don't know if that would make any difference. Don't think so though.
