So is it possible? The trans is out of an 88' Supra turbo...was wondering if it was similar to the R151 trans that is swappable.

Darin,

The short answer is, "not easily."

This thread has a more detailed explanation:

Thanks for the link Jeff, exactly the information I needed. Whole reason I asked: There is an R154 local for $150 with 66,000 miles on it. Last night I tore the rear case off of my spare W56 to see if I could find the source of a piece of bearing internals I found under the shifter. Found it! lol Anyways, not like its needed or anything, just all of a sudded took an interest in transmissions etc.

Thanks again.

Ya know, I kinda doubt one observation in that thread, that first gear is part of the shaft. Its pressed on. I don't know if it could be pressed off and a new one reliably pressed on though. I also wonder if the R151 tail housing could be swapped to support a transfer case.

Kinda moot though, if you have access to an R151, you probably would just rebuild it and use it.

Darrin, got your PM. Looks like you are getting the tranny bug. Its not hard to work on those babies, much easier than a motor overhaul... Follow the article tricks and your W56 will be a sweet shifter.

Yoda Man over at BC4x4 swapped the R154 internals into a 151 case for his 7mgte swap, might be worth checkin out:

Appears to be a R150 case. Very, very similar. You're stuck with either the chain drive transfer case or about a $400 bill for a Marlin adapter though.

I'm pretty sure you CAN swap the R151 tail onto an R154....But like you said, if you have an R151 to swap from, why would you bother?....Unless your're trying to run an R-series trans behind a Supra motor....

As to the input shaft, according to Marlin, THEEEE Master, the input and gear ARE machined from one piece...

I don't think they are talking about 1st gear, they are talking about "THE" first gear on the input shaft. It is part of the input shaft, and I believe it has been welded on. The problem with this, is that this gear is different on the R151 and the R154. This gear drives the counter shaft. This caused a hole slew of problems, but still makes it possible. From what I have read, you get a terrible 1st gear because of all this.

It is better to make torque at high rpm than at low rpm, because you can take advtage of gearing.

Yep, same gear I was referring to. I think its pressed on, because a mechanic friend uses the input shaft sans gear as a clutch tool. Mind you, I doubt my 12 ton press could separate it (there's 'merely' pressed on, then there is REALLY QUITE SINCERELY pressed on).
