Need a Spot
I've got a 84 CJ8 that has an intermittant problem. Once in a while when I make a turn it begins to occillate. The front end/steering wheel turn back and forth. Its anywhere from a rapid almost shake to a slow wander, if a cop was following he would bust me for drunk driving. If I stop work the wheel lock to lock a time or two it goes away. I can;t intentionally dupicate the problem. Anyone else ever have this? Anyone have any ideas?

Body Damage is Cool
A couple different things, one, it sounds a little like the "death wobble" (ball joints, loose tie rod ends, out of alignment) Second, are you driving with your hubs locked in?
Or maybe a hub is "stuck" in locked in mode? If so, it sound like you could have a front axle u joint that is seized.
Sounds like some maintenance could fix it?

Be sure to check out your tie rod ends closely. A friendwith a (cowinkydink) 84 cj was replacing his bent tie rod and discovered one end was completely stripped out. At a glance the end looked fine but it was loose and had wallowed out all the threads. jeepdoc.com has great prices on whole tie rods with ends if you need one.

Additionally, you may want to check the actual bolts that hold the steering gear to the framerail. I have found that these bolts come loose over time. The brackets that hold the gear are kinda wimpy, you should inspect for cracks around the mounting holes.
