I was at a job site yesterday and someone said that they noticed that my stop lamps didn't appear to be working. I did a quick check and sure enough no illumination.

First checked circuit fuse, bulbs and then thought that since both went out that maybe the stop light switch had gone bad and jumped it to no avail.

The schematic shows a sub fusible link but I can't figure out where it might be.

Any help appreciated, the monte is front and center this weekend but will be left in the garage without brake lamps functioning.

thanks

As far as I know, your layout is just like mine. There are a number of sub-fusible links under the hood, on the driver's side fender. A couple of the main fusible links are in a little black box that you can open and inspect, but several are in the wires that run alongside that box, or are near it. I'm at work, so I don't have my manuals handy. If you have a manual, see if they're not in that immediate area.
There are a few more under the dash, but I would check the manual and look there, first.

Check/clean/replace your Hazard switch. This is a common complaint.

And check the ground wires, another common fix for the problem. Usually in older rigs (especially ones that get used offroad), the ground wires either wear down and fail or the corrosion bug gets under teh body mount.

Interesting. My hazard switch is broken. I've been driving around with a replacement for a couple of weeks, and I have no trouble with my stop or turn signals. Of course, it may just be mechanically broken, and the connections are still in good shape...

If any of the internal parts go, you will be without too.

Thank you all for the insight. The grounds were ok, the culprit looks like the right turn indicator switch. I investigated the hazard switch and it was operating ok, but noticed that although the right front turn signal worked when actuated by the lever at the column, it wouldn't work when actuated by the hazard switch. We are still chasing but think we have it cornered.

Thanks all, Kary I wouldn't have thought of the hazard which was really the breakthrough.

Wiring diagrams are not my strong suit.

p.s. didn't get to use the monte over the holiday, so my wife's 4 runner got real wet.
