How many 4runners sold with e-locker? #458500 06/02/04 04:15 PM

I'm about to start shopping for a '99 or '00 4runner. I'd like to find one with a 5spd and the e-locker. The e-locker was not available with the 4cyl, correct? Does anyone know approximately what proportion of V6 4runners were sold with the e-locker? Since only about 10-20% of the 4runners in the local ads are 5spd I'm a little worried about finding one with an e-locker. What are my chances?

For what it's worth, I'm located in Vancouver, Canada. But I imagine the market's reasonably similar to the US.

I bought a 96 4Runner Limted, and it has the E-locker.. but I think only the special versions have the e-locker like the Limited. But do not quote me on that one. And also I am pretty sure that the 99 was the last model they made in 5 spd.. also dont quote me on that one. I also live in Vancouver B.C.... to be more specific, Langley.

Good luck finding that one out

Much slimmer. It's doable if you're patient, though.

I'll quote you, but in a nice kind of way! All models were available with them.

Sorry (again )! It was actually the 2000 models.

Humm.. Interesting. Are you sure about that? I was able to use the "Way Back Machine" (now just plainely called "archive.org") to check out the specs directly from the archive from March 2000 of Toyota.com. Check it out, it's an interesting tool! Unfortunetly they didn't archive toyota.ca, so I can't be sure of the canadian version...

However, if you look at the specs for the 2000 version it clearly mentions the locker option for SR5 and Limited but does not mention it for the base model (4cyl).

Does anyone else know if/when the e-locker was offered with the 4cyl? The way I see it is that since the 4cyl requires a different diff ratio than the V6s they couldn't just stick the same e-locking diff in the 4cyl as an option so decided to ommit it altogether.

Yes, it was definitely available on the 4-cylinders. Might be rare, but they're out there.

Mudrunner
When I was looking for my truck in 2002 I had a dealer tell me only 5% of the total production in 2000 were 5 speeds. But, it was a dealer saying that so take it for what it's worth...

5% sounds a little low but there weren't many. I ordered my '00 and waited 2 months for it's arrival. For the '00 model year there was a semi dressed up SR5 badged as "Highlander" that I believe had the e-locker in it's package. I believe that all of the Limiteds that I looked at had the e-locker.....'course ya couldn't get a Limited with a stick. Thus the motivation for me to get the "D" pkg. Had everything but the really fancy 'lectric gadgets and of course the e-locker.....leather, sunroof, flares......the nice low profile black ones. Ya know if it weren't for that flippin' clutch pedal bushing problem (I went through 5 bushings and 2 pedal assemblies under warranty) I might've kept it. Two weeks after I surrendered the '00, I came across a post that fixed the bushing problem with a lighter spring aaaaaarrrrgh! Oh well, the growl of the V8 tends to moderate any ill feelings

The e-locker wasn't offered to me as an option, but I'm sure I coulda got it if I had asked. The "Highlander" may have been a locally/dealer optioned truck, but, I think I remember someone else actually seeing one. They were out the year before Toyota introduced the Camry known as todays' Highlander 2000 only?

Good luck in your search.

Steve shaefer has a 4cyl that came stock with an E-locker

The Highlander edition came out in 99' and 00' after that it was called the sport edition. A few of the options in the package was the HD springs and E-locker. Any model was avaliable with the E-locker, but you may have needed to special order one. When I went searching for my rig, I couldn't find one with the option package that I wanted. The dealer said he could special order it for me, but it would take a few months. My only other option was to get the Green Highlander that I now own. At the time I wanted a lighter color and really didn't care about the cosmetic hood scoop, since then both have grown on me.

This website gives a good breakdown of the options available to and the differences between the different generations... of course, as with everything else on the 'net, I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it is the reference I use...

Now, from my memory of reading this, the e-locker was only available with 4x4 4Runners, and I think that's the only limitation. Again, though, that's just from my memory of reading at that website...

Don't go to that website unless you're ready for a LOT of information!
