Its getting hot, actually it IS hot outside and my A/C is not running. This weekend I'm starting a list of work on my truck and want to get the A/C running as well. I've shopped around for the compressor and this is what I have.....Dealership: $378 w/$20 core deposit...ACkits.com: $366...and the local All Import shop: $280 w/$40 core. Now the Q is do I stay w/a new OE, or should I go cheaper w/a reman. I know OE is better for certain things, but am I ok getting by this time with a reman unit? Oh, I will also be converting to R134a, most of the other parts I need cost the same just about anywhere. Any suggestions? You guys always have the answer I'm looking for!

What makes you think the compressor needs replaced?
If a leak develops anywhere in the system, all the freon escapes, and the compressor oil goes with it. So there's a low-pressure cutoff switch in the system to prevent you from running the compressor without oil until it siezes and you *DO* need a new compressor.

You might just need to add the freon. The compressor will not kick in if the freon is low.

I did have the system dye tested a few months ago. Tech informed me that while there still was some freon in the system it did have a slow leak from the compressor which would only get worse. On a cloudy day or at night it cools a little bit, but during the day in direct sun when its 90 degrees it doesn't help at all.

Why don't you have the compressor rebuilt! When I worked for Toy, I can remember getting rebuild kits for the compressor! They actually were pretty inexpensive, they came with all the seals, clutches...! If it is truely leaking! They're easy to do! Good Luck!

So the compressor itself leak? not very common. Usually, it's the rest of the system that leaks... You should be able to get a used one from the junkyard. there's kits out there to convert the r12 to r134.

Well nunsa, the rebuild option is sounding better and better since I am on a very tight budget right now. Although I wont throw out the idea that something else is leaking. Might have to test it again. I'm just going on what I was told when the system was tested last. Plus I want to go ahead and covert to 134a b/c of the cost of the R12 now days. I know it doesn't cool as well but I only have a single cab and not one of those 'cavernous' 4runners Anyway thanks for all the opinions and advice you guys!

Ther was thread not too long ago about getting your own certification, whic was said not hard to do, then you get the freon off of *bay for cheap. Couple that with a rebuild and your on your way for cheap! certification
