Gas mileage question on 3.4 aut vs manual #464435 06/15/04 03:27 PM

I see that the 3.4 V6 4Runner is rated at better gas mileage with the automatic vs the 5 speed. Is this really the truth? Does the automatic really get better mileage? What kind of real world mileage are people seeing with the newer(96-02) V6 4Runners? My current truck(SS454 pickup) gets 11 mpg so anything is an improvement.

I used to get real shitty mileage in my 3.4 auto, I used to be happy with 225 miles to a tank. After going back to 265-70s and using the gas better, I'm gettin over 300 per tank and about 19MPG. I'm happy with that. On the way back from the Beach I went through a whole tank almost and the light came two days ago and I'm on 275 miles a tank, but I did about 85 MPH average on the way home for 250 miles.

I found a 98 4Runner SR5 5 speed that I'm thinking about buying but I was surprised to see the automatic rated 1 mpg better.

Long ago, before I lifted mine, I got around 300 as well and mine is a 5 speed. If you like driving a 5 speed I would get it, as they are extremely hard to find. The difference in gas mileage between the two is probably not noticable at all. The one thing I love about my manual is that it is nowhere near as sluggish as the auto.

I think the reason behind the difference is in the gearing. Even though the auto is heavier, it has taller gearing, and thus fewer revs at speed. This explains why the 5-speeds (like mine, I might add! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />) feel quicker and the autos get a tad bit better mileage.

Hey Sherpa does the blower have anything to do with making it "feel" quicker, and does the pitch of the engine as it gets up into the powerband give you the urge to run at higher RPMs? ... it did for me, but the mileage is still better than the 3.0L
