what width tire you running with your longfields? #467735 06/23/04 02:45 AM

im planning on replacing my birfields with longfields and am wondering what width tire i can safely run. i know the wider the tire on rough terrain isnt good for your truck, but keeping in mind i am a conservative off roader..would a 35x16-15r bogger be too much? this truck is mostly used for off road so the streetabilty isnt an issue. what size tires are you guys running and how does your truck like them?

This is just my personal opinion, but if you want the most strength out of your Longfield, i would ask for the ringed version and have him treat your stockers.

I haven't visited Pirate lately to hear the latest, but it's my opinion that Long and others might be using cheap birf knockoffs and then treating them. Obviously they are still better than stock, but I would treat factory stockers and have the ring installed. The stock birfs have bigger cages and the ring addresses the concern of the thin bell wall.

I personally suspect that Long and A/P went with the cheaper birf knock off to be able to sell the things at a cheaper price. I think they don't weld the ring on, because the knock offs have a thicker bell (but smaller cage), and it saves them a ton of time and money. They claim a better turning radius also, although I don't notice any problem with my turning radius and ringed Longs.

Again just my opinion. I would check with others to hear what the lastest is with the Longfields.

35-12.5 MT/R's- no problems with the old style Longs. You can still get'm w/ the ring from Long's

I've been around guys running TSL SX 38's and 40's w/ Long's- they still break'm occasionaly.

good thing to consider brian. what are you using on your truck? thanks,

wvuguy..i went to randys site and didnt see anything on toyotas.

so does anybody think a 35x14.50 is too much for a redone birf with hardened inners?

I'm running 39x15's TSL's (previously 35 boggers), ring type. I dont expect them to last very long though, if Mark ever gets them put up, there may be some pics of them on the house (obstacle) and obstacle #1 on his site. Blue 4runner. www.mountainjam4x4.com

The Bent To Grind (BTG) crew's pic's- Az Rock Crawler

Other than JackA's tube buggy w/ D60's and Scott's Jeep, the guys are running Toy axles. If I remember correctly, the smallest tires in the club are 37-13.5 Baja Claws. They do break'm, but they hold up better than you'd expect.

I just run 35x12.5-15s. I think what he's referring to on Randy's is the Birfield eliminator, which basicly trades the birfields for Dana 44 U-joints.

I don't know enough about the strength of the Dana 44 joints to comment on them. I'm sure changing one out would be a heck of a lot less messier than changing a birfield. But I also don't see the guys on Pirate rushing out to buy the kit, so that makes me wonder if it's worth it.

There are pages of reasons on that issue on the PBB.

I run 35s and just recently busted a stock birf myself, Moderate duty wheeler & dd. Going w/ringed LONGs and 4340 inners.

That Birfield eliminator kit is not new. I have been running one for three years. Mine is a Redline kit, it is the same as the one Randy's sells, and RandyÆs bought the design from Redline!!!!!!
