Getting the Wheeling Fever
The needle tends to jump at idle between 0-800 rpm, and lately it's been happening under power, too. Not the actual motor rpms, just the needle.

I imagine it's some sensor. I was just wondering if my imagination in on target and, if so, if anyone knows how much of a pain in the this is gonna be. THanks guys!

I have a similar problem on my 3.2L SOHC Trooper, but it is intermittent as to when it will rear it's head. When it is a problem, the tach will read several hundred rpm low at idle, and several hundred rpm high at speed. I decided that it wasn't worth it...nothing is actually wrong with the engine or transmission, so I might aswell just leave it alone. Best o luck

I have had the same tach problem. I would suggest checking into replacing the sending unit/sensor for this gauge.
I have not solved the problem yet. I am hoping that its just a sensor problem.

Body Damage is Cool
Well my aftermarket tach gets its info from the negative side of the ignition coil. But I think the tachs that come stock take the signal from the computer.

Anyway you might want to check the frame to engine grounds. Or maybe change the wiring to go strait to the coil. Or maybe just swap out the tach to an aftermarket gauge in the dash.

Below is the PDF installation manual for my tach. ItÆs probably not very helpful, but anyway.
