Just got back from vacation, and realized I hadn't shut the door all the way, letting the battery drain completely. I've tried jumping it, and nothing happens... its like I haven't even turned the key. Do I have to buy a new battery, or can I recharge it? Are there any computer things that must be reset? TIA Mitch

Assuming the battery was in good condition to begin with (do you check battery fluid levels and top off w/ distilled H20 regularly? are the terminals clean of oxidation, etc.) and you didn't leave it discharged for several months, you should be able to recharge it.
Simply hook up the jumper cables again and run the other vehicle for 5 minutes or so at 2k rpm or higher before trying to start your vehicle. This will get the alternator in peak charge rpms (this is what AAA guys tell me anyways.).

Thanks Ray, I cleaned everything and checked for corrosion, but the battery is sealed so I cant check water levels or anything. I tried the 5 min charge as well, but no luck. I think it's new battery time. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Its likely the cables are broken or not making contact. I assume your hooking negative to negative? Also, the doner vehicles engine should drop in RPMs once the cables are hooked up right, as it trys to charge the other battery. Cheap, thin jumper cables sometimes seem hopeless on a super dead battery, but a set of premium, heavy gauge cables will do the trick.

It can take a pretty long time to get enough of a surface charge on a totaly dead battery to get it to be usefull. A couple of hours with a small charger can help a lot.
Personally I prefer to charge it overnight at a few amps.

I've got a charger with a timer, a 1 amp trickle charge rate, a 10 amp normal charge rate, and a 50 amp start booster. I think I paid about $40 for it, and it works even after I ran over it with the FJ55 and after about 15 years of rattling around in various vehicles. It even survived the FJ55 12" pine tree severing incident (missed my head by about 6" as it took out the windshield from the inside). I've even welded with it and a piece of coathanger wire in a pinch, but no long beads...

Put the battery on the charger. . . It's hosed. New battery installed, fired right up. Case Closed! Thanks for your help guys!
