Today I pulled over with the engine running and put the truck in park. When I tried to go back into drive the shifter wouldn't budge. I remembered the brake override switch on the front of the console adn I've been able to use it to get going again. But what's the cause? I can feel a slight pulse in the brake pedal when I hold it down to shift out of park but nothing happens. What's the deal?

Do you have a body lift?

I had the same problem when the brake pedal position sensor died. Get a friend to help you learn if your brake lights work. If they don't work, replace the pedal position sensor. The 4Runner doesn't know you're pressing on the pedal.

Shortly after posting the question I found out my problem; I was pulling my trailer that day and it had some bare wires that burned the fuse to my brake lights and dash lights out. I guess Toyota built it this way so you just don't jump in and drive around without brake lights? Thanks for the help, looks like i'll be rewiring the trailer this weekend.
