I truly think that dealer raked you through the coals. The other day I cleaned the MAF sensor on my '01 4Runner (80,000 miles). When I plugged it back in and started the truck, I had the exact same three warning lights come on. I turned it off, undid the battery for 5 minutes, then reattached it. When I started the truck again, the lights were gone. And have remained out in the week following this.

That is an outragheous amount of money to pay - EVEN if the canister was bad.

Boy am I feeling stupid, again. No, I did not ask for the old canister back. I checked about the warranty and it did not fall under the 8/80 rule. Some parts are in that, major parts I believe, and the canister is not a major emissions part. I would have tried to replace it myself my I had no idea what this thing was or where it is.

I chalk this up to another stealership visit. Didn't expect anything less to be honest with you. Maybe that's why I am handling this so well.

I think the evap canister can fault if the gas tank is over filled and fuel is sucked up the vapor line into the canister. Haven't heard of it happening on a 4Runner though.
