if you do the cross over steering you need a 86 or newer steering box. Definetly make sure it is power steering. If you are serious about rock crawling you will also need a type of rock assist (hydraulic ram) .

It is hard enough rockcrawling with a front locker and power steering. How do you think you will get by without PS? Impossible. And if not impossible, then it will at least make your wheeling experience difficult and miserable, especially if you are running 35" tires that are aired down to 10lbs with a front locker. Can you say 30 point turn?
Get power steering at the least, and consider ram assist if you are running 35" tires or larger and a front locker.

My friend Mark has a Samuari rockcrawler he's running 33's sometimes 35's he has no power steering and he has been all over the west with it rockcrawling no problems. Although now he has MS and is likley going to put in power steering and hydro assist likley now since he needs it due to his disability. I don't know what he has done to the puddle jumper lately I haven't seen him since his divorce about a year ago since he moved. So you can crawl without power steering it's a real bear though.

Is there any one who makes Ram assist steering for Toyota's? I am probably going to need it. I just got back from Tellico wheeling without power steering on 32's and my arms are killing me. I don't think I could even make it with 36's that are coming.

There is a big difference between a Samurai and a Toyota...about 2,000 lbs. difference at least. No power steering on a Samurai is not even comparable to a Toyota. Completely different vehicles.
All-Pro sells Ram assist I believe. A company called Howe makes Hydro parts for Toyota steering. There is a write up at Roger Brown's site.
