What kinda options do I have with a passenger side offset rear differential for a 40-50s??? CJ?
It currently has a Dana 44 in it with something like 4.30 gears.
Any passenger side rear differential would interest me. I would like to go wider than the current axle but definently don't want to go full width.

get a dana 20 t-case and use any rear end you want. or re tube and get axles made for any axle you want. as far as something offset that you can just bolt in, i can't think of many. maybe something out of a quadra trac fsj. i think they came with offset amc 20's, maybe even some 44's. the full size amc 20 is not the same as the cj turd everybody complains about. it's a little better.

I am also considering using an FJ40 axle combined with a mini truck front end.

d20's can be had for cheep...
i would actually get a d18, with the larger intermediate shaft. a little stronger, and the twin stick can be worked over for 2wd low (better crawl ratio...)

Wagoneers from the 70's have an offset Dana 44. The fullsize Jeep AMC 20's were centered. These offset 44's will be quite a bit wider (about 10") than what you have, so a wider front axle would be necessary also.

he's probably got a d18 already. that's why he's looking for an offset rear end.

I believe matt was suggesting a newer model 18 which does have a larger intermediate shaft and is quite a bit stronger.
The strongest 18 is to take a 20 case and install the Dana 18 internals. The 20 case doesn't have the weak spot that's prone to cracking that all of the 18 cases have. It's a direct swap.

yeah...exactly. something out of a post-60's scout maybe. the d44 rear can be a 71 (only) renegade 2 and a scout front will do...thats what i'm running

One more Question... what do you recommend for steering?
We will probably leave the stock steering box in until the suspension is all worked out. But that will be the next upgrade for sure. What steering boxes and pitman arm combinations will work? IS there anything bolt in or will everything pretty much have to be a special fabrication.
What about good seat replacements, I am open for any fresh ideas about swapping in some cheap bucket seats. Any ideas about moving the Gas tank to the undercarriage somehow?
