My start has been acting funny the past couple weeks. Sometime when I go to start it the solinoid will kick but will not turn over. If I try it sveral time it will finally turn the engine and start up. This morning I went to look at it and see if all the connection were tight, etc. I as I found out you can bearly see the starter let alone get to it to take it out. Who has replaced a starter on a 2nd gen 4wd Rodeo? If I have to replace it any tips would be appriciated!
I searched and found a couple Tooper posts saying the exhuast needs to be removed, but even then there isn't much room. Looks like this will be a big PITA.

I just did this myself within the past few months. All I can say is that you MUST spray the exhaust bolts with PB blaster. There is one section of the exhaust that needs to be removed in order to remove and replace the starter. I would say start spraying at least three days before starting on this project. By doing so you will save yourself $400, believe me I know
Good luck

OK, thanks. Do you have a manual? I was wandering what the Helm shop manual says to do to remove/replace it. It seems that even with the exhuast removed this is a PITA, the front axle is the the way and it is in a tight spot. By doing so you will save yourself $400, believe me I know More to this story?

Yeah me and Frisky took a stab at this task. We didn't know the exhaust section removal needed to be done. What we thought was a simple 1hr job (BS time included) ended up be a four hour task. Well we strip two of the three bolts which had to removed and replaced by shop. They had to remove the entire manifold because everything is so nicely packed together (Thanks Isuzu... ). I paid mostly labor. This is why I say spray spray spray. Send me your email and I'll email some tips to you.

Hey, no fair. I want tips!
when looking for a container to hold drained brake fluid, find a container that is different from the beverage you are currently consuming.

Agreed on wanting the tips. Share and share alike. If you don't have enough for the whole class just keep them to yourself.
At some point all the second gen crowd will end up replacing their starter (or help someone else).

Just as Mando said, the exhaust has gotta be unfastened. I don't think it's possible to not do it. Having had to do it twice, I've got it down pretty well. You'll see the triangular flange. That's the one to undo. IIRC, 2 were really easy to get to, but the top one required me to use a U-socket (don't know the name, but it's the one that swivels). Agreed on the PB Blaster. Spray the heck out of those bolts. I think I also *loosened* a few more bolt on the pipe further down to give me some more wiggle room. Now for the starter...Every thing was pretty straight forward. Disconnect battery, remove heat shield, undo starter bolts (PB helps here too, if you've been playing in the mud), wiggle it off a hair, undo solenoid electrical plug, then pull it off. The hardest part for me was manuevering it so I could pull it through the open space (which you increased by undoing the exhaust). Can't really help you here. Just turn and twist that sucker until you can see that it will come out (took me a few tries). Now that it's out, open up the solenoid, and replace the contacts. Link for starter contact replacement I had to do mine twice because I didn't put the contacts in exactly right. The shop I use in town told me that the contacts were not right (They do a heckuva lot of Denso starters, and tell me that we're lucky to have them.) Turns out that there are several types that Denso uses, and the ones I put in weren't seated dead on and making perfect contact with the plunger. I do know that there is a universal contact available, but I recall mine being both a universal and a half-moon contact. That's it in a nutshell.

If I'm not mistaken you can put brass nuts/bolts back on instead of the rusted steel ones to prevent them from rusting again.Helpfull if you'll have to replace the starter again .

Good thought, you could probably use stainless steel also. As for me, my Rodeo is going to be traded in soon for a mini-van (# 2 child on the way). So now I need to decide if I want to fight with rusty exhuast bolts or just pay someone to do it. It is awffuly hot in Phoenix this time of year, especially working under a car/truck.
