Just curious as to what kinda transmission these bad-ass Toyota Tundras come w/. I've heard they've only got automatics? If this is true, then so much for purchasing one! Tanx!

My understanding is the V8 only comes with an automatic and the V6 only comes with a 5 speed manual. The manuals are pretty tough to find -

True. Automatics only on the V8'S.
They are great but the ECU's built-in auto protection retards the rpm's a little more than I like between 1st and 2nd.
4WD V6 5 speed Tundra's are very rare.
The regular cab V6 5 speed is more plentifull.

The Tundra V8 automatic transmission is a very solid transmission, which comes with 3.91 gears stock. I have found the Tundra's automatic transmission to be everything I needed it to be. The stock crawl ratio is 28 to 1 and in low range that increases to 56 to 1, which is very sufficient for most applications. 1st gear is 2.80, Torque Converter is 2.10 and the Transfer Case is 2.57. If you want to get down and dirty with the Tundra off-road you'll need to go SAS, 4:56 gears with 35" tires or 4:88 gears with 37" tires along with the rest of the goodies but you don't have to worry about the strength or reliability of the transmission, as it'll hold up to anything you can throw at it. I also went with the Marlin Crawler to make my pedal control a no brainer.

Speak for yourself, there are a few of us here that have that awful 3.0. (93 & 94 model T100's) However, mine is doing fine with 192K on odometer. Putting more miles on the T now since I wrecked the S.U.V., that's "SMALL UGLY VEHICLE". The SUV had a deer magnet in it and a deer was attracted to it at 55 mph. However, my 3.0 came with 470 gears stock. I am hoping that when the motor goes, I can do a swap to either the 3.4, 4.7 or maybe even a diesel...if Toyota eventually brings some into this country.

Now to get this back on topic, I know several people at work that have Tundra's (all automatics). They also tow Bass boats and have not had a single problem with them. They usually have to travel and cross several mountains (that would be hills to you guys in the west). One of the guys just went and bought a new 4-door Tundra and kept his old one just for when he is going fishing and hunting and not taking his buddies. He actually has over 100K on odometer and never had a single problem with anything on the truck, but then again he is kinda anal about the maintenance on it.

Hmmm. Okay then. Good to know. Maybe I'll get me a T-100 then instead! What kinda gas mileage could I expect to get from a 3.4liter 5speed 4x4 Ex-Cab, which will be mainly used as a daily driver? I'm checking out a 1998 model! However, I may still go after a nice Tacoma if'n I can't find just what I want! The T-100's are a nice full-size pickup, which would be a roomier step up from my ol' 1991 P.I.T.A! Ahhh...decisions-decisions!

PS: Thanks for the responses!!!

Do a search on gas mileage... You'll find a whole bunch of responses. I threw 33's on mine the week I got it, so I have no idea what the norm is.

They are rated to get 16-19 mpg, and I seem to average 18.5 mpg in town with a high of 21.4 mpg on the highway. You might do a little better in a Taco with the same motor since it weighs about 1,000 lbs less than a T100.

So why should he do a search just because you can't remember?

So many people respond with "Do a search" which generally results in old posts that say "Do a search". It's the information age and even if some of it's repetitive to longtime owners and forum members, new T owners and members who want to ask questions and to hear first hand accounts shouldn't be brushed off because you've replied to similar posts many times before.

Let me make clear, I AM NOT KNOCKING 4XGEEK. I just don't understand taking the time to reply with "Do a search" when replying with the answer would be just as easy. Unless you're 4xGeek and just don't know the answer....
