Getting the Wheeling Fever
(1992 v6 Rodeo LS)
newbie question but this is the first vehicle (and first Isuzu) I've owned with auto locking hubs.

Are my cv's turning all the time just as if I had locked my old manual hubs?

If I want to convert to manual locking hubs what do you guys recommend?

With that era of Rodeo, as long as you've unlocked the hubs by backing up in 2wd for several feet, you're unlocked. It's not like the later drive flanges they put in play.

If you do choose to switch to manuals, Aisins are often the hub of choice. Warn and Superwinch also offer manuals that will fit your truck. Aisins can be had from indepenent4x.com or several other avenues. Salvage yards may have them as well.

CVs only turn when you stop, put in 4wd move forward or backwards while in 4wd, once you disengage 4wd and reverse the direction you were going in, the unlock and the cvs will not spin. I highly recommend switching to manuals. I have the warns and love them. Extremely simple to work on and with, cheap to rebuild, rebuild kits are available within 2-3 days from any parts store that carries warn stuff. Never had aisins, but never heard a complaint. IMO, the warns also look lots better. If you have auto hubs, dont try to pop into 4wd with the hubs unlocked while moving. It does not, i repeat, does not sound pretty at all. Thats something I did a time or 2 before I knew better and even after by mistake. Last few times was because the hubs bit the dust. Warns go on in minutes without modification. I would stay away from the superwinch hubs, you can search on here about the problems they had. You wont find too many problems with the warns though. I am biased tho, I have the warns and love them.

BTW, single best mod I did to increase offroad traction and assurance.

And since there have been notes on Aisins and Warns ... I can also say I haven't had any issues with my SuperWinch hubs in the years I've had them. I do like the look of the SuperWinch hubs as well, though I've heard the Aisins are strongest.

Not sure there's really a wrong choice when it comes to manual hubs.

But don't necessarily rule out the autos. They will eventually go out on you (if they haven't already) but until they do, they work pretty well.

Only bad thing is when you get in mud or sand and want to rock out. As you go backward and forward the hubs will constantly lock and unlock, leaving you in 2wd for a couple of tire revolutions just when you want 4wd the most.

Thanks for the responses guys!

sjsjeep: I don't need the hubs yet, Since the cv's are not turning all the time I'll hold on to these as long as they last then switch to manual hubs.

It will be nice not to have to wade through the mud becuase I forgot to lock the *@#$%! hubs. (Last year I had to stick my arm up to my shoulder in mud to lock them. They called me SwampThing all weekend! )

I've got a set of Superwinch and they work fine. Whichever hubs you decide to go with, make sure you locktite the bolts in place. If I didn't have to change my cv's awhile ago, I would never have noticed that the bolts were coming loose on me. At least not until it would have been too late.
