I was driving home today, and noticed something was weird while shifting. When I pushed in the clutch was off the gas, engine was at 3k. At the stop light it idled right at 3,000 rpm. Even after turning it off and restarting, it still idles at 3k. I thought the TB might have got stuck open, but its fine. What could be causing this? And how is it idling at 3k with the TB only open a crack?

Check out your throttle position sensor, it may be on its last legs.

Take the TPS off the throttle body and clean all the chit outta the return spring on the backside. Spray it with Electrical parts cleaner or brake cleaner while holding it with the spring side down to help prevent contaminating the innards. Blow the spring with compressed or and give it a few snaps with your fingers to make sure its returning to the closed position. If this isnt the problem then you need to disconnect your throttle cable from the T-body and inspect the cable itself for any fraying that may be causing it to hang up in the sleeve. Hope this isnt the case...when I replaced the cable on the 88' I had to get the part from Toyota to the tune of just under $70. Still feeling that one 3 years later.

I just went out and sprayed the TPS down with electronic cleaner (still on truck) and moved the opened the TB a few times. Started it up, idling back at 750. Glad that was a simple fix.

It happened again this morning on the way to work. I messed with the TB at lunch and got it back to normal again, but it seems to be a recurring problem. I think i'm going to pull the TB tonight and see if i can find anything wrong. I might throw on my spare TB.

Check to make sure you haven't got a leak (crack) in the air intake hose. Any air getting in between the MAF and TB will throw off your idle, though usualy not up to 3K.

Unless I was smokin' somthin' when this happened to me, for the hecks of it I took my EGR valve off and found it wasn't fully actualting so I cleaned it the best I could put it back together and my idle was perfect. It started the high idle thing again so once again I took off the EGR, cleaned it, Idle was good agin. Esquire812 thought maybe I running a little rich so leaned her out a bit and so far my idle hasn't been acting up. My new exhaust has very little carbon build up on it. (formerly 2Bigblue2) By the way, thanks Darin

Body Damage is Cool
I had a similar problem...turned out to be the dash pot on the throttle body. The rubber boot was torn, and I guess enough crap finally got in there to mess with it.

It took me awhile to figure it out, though, because it would only happen when the dash pot got hot. I inspected it a few times while the DP was cooler and it worked fine.

Then I pulled over to the side of the road once while it (the engine idling around 3000 RPM) was actually happening. At that point I was able to close the TB a little bit more by pushing on the linkage and the idle dropped to normal.

However, the dash pot wasn't done fighting yet It actually pushed the throttle back out a bit and raised the RPM back up to 3000 RPM. So, I took out the little stopper bolt (or whatever you call it) to disable the dash pot (so it wouldn't actually contact the throttle linkage anymore) and the rest of the ride home went fine. Once home, I sprayed a bunch of silicon lube inside the torn boot on the dash pot and re-installed the stopper screw. It has worked fine since. (I could drive fine with the dash pot disabled...if you do a search, you will fine a thread about the pro's and con's of disabling your DP.)

Also, there is a bypass inside the throttle body that allows air to go around the butterfly plate. The bypass is closed with the engine at normal operating temp. When the engine is cold, however, the bypass is open so that the engine will idle at high-idle instead of normal idle. Once the engine coolant heats up, it closes the bypass and your idle drops down to normal. (It doesn't seem likely that this is causing your problem, though, since your idle is so far above the normal high idle mark. But, this is one way air can get by without the TB being open.)
