Hey guys, IÆm at the point now that I need to decide what IÆm going to do with my front axle. Separate from anything else, IÆm going to need a new drive shaft. My front axle is 3 inches forward of stock. IÆve lifted the truck 5 inches. Now, as I see it my choices are: 1. Rotate the front diff and get a cv drive shaft. 2. Get a LC hi-pinion diff, which would mean new gears and another locker. 3. Buy a FROR front axle housing and keep my gears and locker. If you have any other ideas (short of going with a 44) let me know. Another thing IÆve been thinking of is in-boarding my rear springs. Any thoughts on this? A brief update on my progress (someday IÆll post pics on my web site). IÆve got all the wiring out and ready to start rewiring. IÆve ordered a lifeline battery. I should get my f/r cross members back from the machinist today. The mount for my fuel cell is complete and ready to install. Basically I was being held up waiting for my x-members. When I get them I can weld them in, redo my steering box and drop in the engine. IÆm going to order my t-case stuff from Marlin this week. Thanks for any ideas or feedback. Mark

I really really like my LC high pinion. The driveline is about ideal with double cases and an 85 CV, still would be with a single though. I can drive in FWD and only get a slight torque steer effect. Smooth as silk and some additional clearance too.
You would most likely recoup some coin selling your 4 cyl third with locker.
The FRORF axle would be cool (I assume you would rotate the pinion on it) but $$$, and then you still have a 4cyl third.

I know, it's that freakin' "cool" factor that's killing me! I think I'm leaning toward rotating it at the knuckles and fabbing up some new perches. I like to make things work and make 'em cool. Mark

I would go D44 again. The significantly decreased turning radius, as well as the width improvement, and ease of finding cheap parts at any auto parts store just makes it a convenient choice. The fact that my experience with it compared to my yota fronts was that it is much stronger in stock form, is an added bonus.

One more thing. No more greasy closed knuckles to open up! I hated those things...

i'd go for a hybrid axle. toy center section, d44 knuckles. you get more ground clearance, a drop out third member and open knuckles.
you can also have them built to use stock d44 shafts, since they'll work in a toyota carrier. the pressure angle on the splines is a bit different but if it really bugs you, you could always have moser or superior build you a new set
'79 sport 4x4 longbed 20/22R hybrid with EB's OS valves, 268c cam, offy intake, weber 32/36, thorley header, 5 speed swap, 34" LTBs, downey 3" springs, marlin hysteer, 4.88s and locked
'91 4x4 shortbed 22R-E, W56, the dd!
