Been away for awhile because of life changes, but need help with a problem. My truck idles and accelerates well, but holding a steady speed in 3rd at 35mph or 4th at 45mph results in the engine missing almost once per second. One shop couldn't find a problem. Took it to the dealer for advanced diagnosis and they think it is the mass air sensor and estimate the cost with labor at $850.
Does this sound like the right diagnosis? If so, are there any other options for replacing the part- like can I get a good used one and replace it myself?
Thanks,
Mark

Install a new Toyota cap, rotor, and wires, along with new (properly gapped) Denso or NGK plugs. Should fix this.

BTW: An '87 22-RE does not have a mass airflow sensor. It does, however, have an Air Flow Meter (AFM), but I doubt that is the problem. They are just hoping you are desperate enough to throw parts at the problem, at your expense.

Just to throw my .02 in also...I recently purchased the
above meantioned parts at my Toyota dealer for under $90.
If you haven't replaced these parts recently it'd
be a good place to begin and alot cheaper than $800!
Good luck.

Search for 4Crawlers procedure on setting the TPS to spec. Your problem sounds like what I went through after the first head swap. Code 51 would pop up as soon as the engine was started. Cruising down the highway I could hear/feel it miss when holding steady RPMs...once I learned how to set the TPS to the sweetspot the problem was solved.

On your AirFlowMeter, unless you've messed with it or been in an accident where that corner was hit hard....chances are there is nothing wrong with it. They rarely if ever just go bad. Give the garage the finger unless they wanna cover the parts they are gonna throw at it.
