Getting the Wheeling Fever
I was told today by a local gear shop who said they got the info from River City differentials that if i want to go from my stock gears 3.58 to 4.30 i would have to change the carrier due to a spacing issue? Has anyone heard of this?
Thanks

sounds like major b.s. to me, I have a 98 2.7l taco and i went to a Precision Gear 4.88 front and rear w/the stock carriers.

They are telling me that 4.10 up is ok it is specifically the 3.58 that is the problem. Sounds like bs to me too but dont want to have all the guts out and then find out for sure..

I'm not 100% sure on this but its my understanding that the original gear ratio doesn't affect the carrier. The difference comes when you have the TRD package and the E-locker. I'm pretty sure that all non-TRD Taco's have the same carrier and all the TRD Taco's have a different carrier. I don't think factory gears determine the carrier.
Good luck,

Body Damage is Cool
I think someone's been working on too many Danas. That's the case with the D44 3.92 down v 3.92 up carriers. That would probably prompt me to find another gear shop.

no 4x4, i have talked to a different shop and they got the same info. This is also part of my problem. Most stock gears are 4.1 or better so the amount of tacomas that came with 3.58 or 3.73 is not many. I thought i had one nailed down but the guy had a 98 that came with 3.58 but under warranty they changed to 4.1 and he said they replaced the complete rear end when doing it?? I called Randy's Ring and Pinion and they say no split on toyota. It would be nice to get the difinitive answer from someone who has taken one apart. Is the preload like the 8in with screw in caps or shims? I suppose that would be all i really need to know. Thanks for the input guys. Curt

Non TRD rears use shims/spacers fr carrier pre-load. I have been told that the TRD's us the carrier screw caps like on the older 8"

I have never heard of these 3rd's having 2 carrier sizes, and if the Gear vendors dont have a split then Id be doubtfull.

talked to a parts mgr for toyota dealer and they say there is only 2 carriers TRD and NoN TRD. If there is a split of some kind there is no other carrier avail from toyota so must not be one..
