Board of Supervisors Declares a State of Local Emergency

PLACERVILLE û The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution today declaring that a State of Local Emergency exists in association with the use of the Spider Lake û Little Sluice Area adjacent to the Rubicon Trail, a popular recreational trail located in the upper Sierra Nevada within El Dorado County.

A significant amount of human fecal waste has been deposited within this area creating a health and safety threat to the users of the Rubicon Trail, and a health
and safety threat to adjacent lakes and streams, which in turn flow into the American River Watershed. The unsanitary conditions of this area of the Rubicon Trail have resulted in the degradation of an environmentally sensitive area. Effective today the Spider Lake û Little Sluice Area will be closed for recreational use for 120 days. The closure will not affect the use of the Rubicon Trail as a thoroughfare.

GOOD GOD!! Must be a lot of traffic thru there. Would take a lot of people pooping in the bushes to contaminate an entire river system.

this is a heavy blow to us 4 wheelers. This trail seems to be popular, and seems to have a popular name. I have heard of this trail a few times and have never been to Cali. (well i did when i was 7)

this is not good to hear, nor does it sound nice

The Rubicon Trail itself runs past Spider Lake, and is still open.

The greater Spider Lake area (south of the Rubicon Trail) is under emergency closure until November 10th for ALL users (not just OHVs)... more details at www.friendsoftherubicon.com -- clikc to the FOTR pages from there.

There is a huge amount of recreational use up there... but keep in mind that this closure was made based on appearances, and the water tests that were taken at the time of the closure came back as unremarkable for a mountain lake.
The closure was instituted based on 'threat' that did not prove out in testing. There's no measurable effect to the downstream watershed or water supplies, nor is their measurable effects to Spider Lake itself. In other words, this closure is a political move, one not founded by science.
Perhaps it will prove to be a positive thing, in the long run, as an eye-opener to recreational users (again, not just OHV-ers), but that assumption will have to be based on the scheduled lifting of the temporary ban. Personally, I'm doubtful that it *will* get re-opened on time, and I think this closure was ill-conceived and ill-executed, forcing underfunded enforcement into clear opposition with the many under-educated users of the area (not just OHV users, either).
