The temperature, altimeter, and compass unit overhead on my trooper is working poorly. The outside temperature climbs if I'm not moving, like about 15-20 degrees when I stop at a stop light. The altimeter is up and down 200 feet for no known reason. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? Thanks

If i recall correctly the sensor for the temp is located just inside the grill, therefore when standing still the heat buildup from the engine and raod wiill reflect a higher temp. ( For ex. last week in a couple weeks ago in denver it was 95 deg outside and while driving the gauge showed 95. When stopped at a light the guage showed 115deg. (thank God for the inventor of air conditioning!) As far as the altimeter possibly changes in baraometric pressure? Just a wild guess. Have you checked your manual to see if the altimeter needs to ba calibrated? I know the compass needs to be calibrated (a series of turns in specific directions on flat ground away from metal).
On the side, my favorite weather forcaster "Les Nesman on WKRP" Andy: "Les what exactly is your eyewitness weather report?" Les: "I look out the window and say "It's raining a little on the west but the south side is nice and sunny"

So I took my rig into the Isuzu dealer and both service person and the service manager had neither seen an instrument panel with the altimeter and barometer. So I figured they were trying to cover their as most service people do. Then they tell me that they have the top Isuzu mechanic in the country and he would be interested in seeing this for himself. Turns out they changed the oil and told me the same thing you did. Seems that an asbestos or some type of heat shield should be placed between the radiator and the sensor. I've been to the beach twice to set the altimeter. I guess 200 feet off isn't extremely bad. I would think that liability would be an issue if you slid off into another car when your temperature said 40 degrees instead of 30 degrees.
