Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have an 87 runner that is leakin gear oil from the fill nut. my question is, what is the best oil to put back in it, and should I replace the washer/crush washer between the diff and bolt on the fill hole, or just torq the snot out of it. I have a pic, but need to get it hosted if someone needs to see it. thanks.

Refill with whatever type of oil you are running, factory oil specs are listed on my page. First, check your breather, make sure its open. If not, pressure ca build inside the axle and force gear oil out past the seal.

You can try tightening the nut down, untake it, torque down to 90 ft.lbs. or so (much higher and you risk affecting the crush sleeve) then re-stake it and see if it helps. Otherwise, the pinion seal is likely worn out and needs replacing.

Hold on Roger. I think he said the oil fill plug, not the pinion nut. Do not torque the fill hole bolt to 90 ft/lbs or you'll strip your case for sure!
If it is leaking, yes you should replace the washer, only a buck or two. It should never really leak much out of the fill hole since the level is supposed to be at the bottom of the hole. As long as you have the fill bolt removed, you might want to drain and replace the oil (you might have water in
there if it is overfilled). I like redline gear oil.

After re-reading that, yes, looks like the fill plug. Yes, replace the washer (look in the parts number thread for the p/n) and tighten it down. I guess the "crush sleeve" part got me thinking of the pinion nut.
