Getting the Wheeling Fever

I had a rebuilt 22-RE engine dropped into my pickup and everything has been fine until now. There is a timing chain "slapping" noise in the engine when it is cold out or I am going up a hill.
I remember from my past 22-R's that this noise was because of what the mechanics called a "timing chain guide". I remember seeing a picture comparing an engine that had one and and engine that was missing one...possibly on this message board.
I need help finding this part, verifying that it is missing, buying a new part, and installing it.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Serach 4crawlers site for the complete instructions.
Get your parts from engnbldr.com. He goes by the user name EB on this board.
For now, pull your valve cover and inspect the upper timing gear and chain. You should see both guides sticking up on either side of the cam sprocket-just below the sprocket.

I just pulled off the cover and I believe the timing chain guides are still intact. Seeing that they are intact...what else could be making that noise? It is identical to the noise I heard when I was missing the guides on my old engine... Thanks, Rich

Could be the tensioner is hanging up, or is partially restricted at the oil port. Could be an oil pump bolt is out of its proper place and preventing full extension of the shaft. With the exception of the uphill occurances it almost sounds normal. What oil are you running? How about oil filter? If you dont have a filter with anti-drainback valve (and even if you do these days) the filter must fill with oil before the tensioner or topend sees any lube.

My filter is a Toyota factory filter with the anti-drainback valve.
I am running 5W30 oil.
What do you suggest? The noise can get pretty un-nerving on long trips when going up hill...
P.S. The noise usually occurs around 2,200 rpm
Thanks,
Rich

5w30 is lighter than I care for, rule of thumb for me is Valvoline 10w-30....not synthetic either. I was running strictly Toyota filters until I had a few consecutive filters that didnt retain the oil even though they had the anti-drainback diaphragm.
With the trouble occuring at a certain RPM level, you may want to look at your valve clearances and inspect your springs etc. Almost sound more like a topend issue rather than timing chain. Could also be a tuning issue. Double check your timing (Should be 5* BTDC with check connector jumpered) I say this because of the 2200 RPM and hills. Might sound like Im out in left field...maybe I am. But Id be checking these items first.

Like the guy said...I would take it back to installer and ask him to ride along on a test drive....let him hear it....Then tell him you want it fixed under warranty.
Keep it their problem till the warranty runs out.
You DID NOT pull the valve cover or do anything to it other than drive it and keep the oil changed....Right?
Keep us informed, please.

RichK, There have been lots of 22r/22re engine noise probs that seem to plague Toyota Truck forums. If Darin (Esquire812) can chime in here, I think he was saying that he used Fram filters that were quieter that the Factory Toy (most likely the TOYOTA FO-8, #08922-02011. By all acounts, this is a a Purolater Pure One, Made in USA to Toyota specs). I can attest to fact this filter does not seem to hold oil very well in comparison to the much maligned Fram. The Fram does indeed dump a messy amount of oil when removed. I use the the FO-8 because I am deaf (?) . Even with the chain guides broken, i still couldn't hear the the chain slapping a groove into my timing chain cover!

I pulled the valve cover, as you can see from the picture I got above. I made sure everything was sealed tight before putting it back on...
I would like to take it back to the shop that put the engine in for me, but the management screwed me over on my labor warranty (because they had no paper work and I couldn't find mine). (P.S. Japanese Auto in Escondido SUCKS)
I will check the timing, but it was just tuned about 8 months ago, when it was installed and 500 miles after running it.
I'm doing an oil change today so I'll take the recomendations for the oil filters.
I'll keep you updated
