Getting the Wheeling Fever
The more I look at this little rig, the more I like it (better than my wife's '01 Legacy anyways!) She can't drive a stick anymore due to injury (she gets sciatic nerve and knee joint pains after 5 miles and they lasted for a month so far!)
Probably too late anyways, since I am putting a new flywheel and clutch as well as starter in this one. (and a GM 1 wire alternator) I found a 2wd Mitsu pickup with auto I can probaly convert (but that would depend what the input is on the '87 Montero Tcase?)
Did Mitsubishi ever use an Aisan Warner automatic with the 4 cyl?

Body Damage is Cool
I don't think you will be happy with the older 5 speed tranny with aluminum case. They have shaft bearing problems. If you do go with one, have it rebuilt and upgraded.

Other headaches...

The A/T is longer:
- the mounts are different
- the x-maember is different
- the tcase is further back
- the front drive shaft is longer
- the rear drive shaft is shorter

The carb also needs to be swapped out for the A/T version, and the linkage will be needed.
