I have a problem that I hope I can fix myself. Recently, when I turn on my A/C. There is water or some similar fluid that leaks on the floor on the passenger side of the car. It wets the carpet and floor only on that side. This only started within the past month and only happen when the A/C is turned on.. Any suggestions?? Thanks all....

PS What causes high idle?

Solution: the evaporator drain line is plugged. All A/C systems dehumidify as well as cool so the water collected by the evaporator has to drain off. The drain line is on the passenger side coming down out of the firewall. Normally you should see drips of water onto the pavement from that side if the drain is working. If no drip you'll have to get under there and see what's going on.

High idle? How high? When the A/C is on you'll see the idle boost up slightly, perhaps about 200 RPM but no more.

I appreciate the a/c tip. I think someone said the tubewas clogged before(how it gets clogged is beyond me?).

Also the high idle was pretty high and loud in neutral. I had to repair a vaccum hose that caused a low idle before but double checked it everything seems to be ok.

Any suggestions?

Dirt and bacteria can clog the drain tube.



How high? What's the approx RPM reading? And is it all the time or intermittent?

The tube could also be missing. Mine was after a shop (not the dealer) worked on the heater core. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Intermittent high idle is a common problem. There are electrical wiring harness issues to the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), IAC (Idle Air Control) valve, and Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). The issue is not the sensors themselves. It is the electrical connectors TO the sensors. They develop corrosion and high resistance over time. The result is random CEL's (check engine lights) and the most common symptom where the engine idle suddenly and without warning jumps up to 1500 RPM or above.

The fix: There are two fixes. Fix 1: Unplug the connectors and clean them up as best you can and re-crimp them. You should be good to go...at least for a while. The problem will eventually come back. Fix 2: Unplug the electrical connectors and cut them off. Solder the wires directly to the TPS, IAC, and MAF. Yes, this is a drastic move. But guess what? It fixes the problem PERMANENTLY. I've done this on my Sportage and haven't had any wacko idle problems since.

The TPS is located on the throttle body where the aluminum intake bolts to it. The IAC is on that same intake roughly above the exhaust side of the engine. It has a connector that faces straight up. The MAF is between the air filter and rubber flex pipe up to the intake. The round plastic unit with an electrical connector on the backside.


Also, one other item to check. Make sure the ground wire between the battery tray and the intake manifold is corrosion free and tightly connected.

I'm gonna try Axe Man's soldering idea too. I had idle problems that went away for a while but have just recently come back. It's worth it to solder the 3 sensors if it fixes it for good.

If I recall you have a 1996 Sportage. The IAC is different on the 1995 and 1996. Check it out before you start cutting wires.

Hats Off To Axeman! Even though I can't find any corrosion on connectors (of course, I maynot be looking at the same connectors), but this is a great forum for kia owners who like to do it yourself. At least here, I get answers and possiblities I can check vs other forums that people don't have a clue!
