Yesterday I took my 98 TJ through some mud/water. A couple of times water would come up and over my hood but not hitting the windshield. Had a great time and was wondering how deep I could take her. People have told me as long as water doesn't enter the breather box I'm good. How deep can a stock TJ go?

Thanks,

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Till the wiring gets wet and shorts or corrodes.

Build your truck the head men say, but it must be built in such a way...

Ya about hit the limit. Open the hood and look where the air intake is - if it goes down there that's bad.

Now go change your diff gear oil (water does get in through the axle seals), the T-case fluid and the transmission fluid. I promise you've got water in all of them.

It is fun to take 'em for a splash though, isn't it? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

wiring isn't much of a problem on the newer vehicles.... if you do it alot you might run into problmes years down the road.

Thanks for the input, I forgot to mention that after the fifth hole in 4 high, smoke came out from the front end and there was a metal to metal grinding noise. I havn't checked it yet because I'm lazy and still in denial.

Thanks,

Body Damage is Cool
a friend of mine years ago bombed his blazer through a mud/water hole above the bottom of his doors. not only did he get stuck but it took days and several batteries to pump the water out the spark plug holes. after we got it running and changed the oil several times, he sold it and bought a Z71 pickup. deep water is usually a bad idea. i try not to go deeper than my diffs unless i can't avoid it.

Forgo the worry and get a snorkel! that way just in case you go too far. The diffs are vented on the tjs as well as the transfer case, but only to the the heighth of the door handles. so check the fluids often if you do a lot of deeop water. tranny you can be screwed on.try to vent that if you can get to the vent tube!

i wouldnt reccomend testing on how deep you can go, you get water rushing into those cylinders and you could cause serious damage, broken rods etc. Nothing cheap... get a snorkle.. then go threw deep water.. you'll thank me..
