How many rubber shift boots???
I have a 96 x-cab 4x4 5sp sr5àI just had my tranny rebuilt and itÆs still having a faint whining in neutral, 1st & 2nd, and really faint in 3rdàit disappears when I push the clutch in while in neutralà
The tranny guys have their head up their a$$àthey seem the extra noise is from a missing shift bootà
What I have is the leather boot thatÆs connected to the console, and a rubber accordian boot, for 2 shifters (the regular one and one for the transfercase) is there an additional boot IÆm missing that would let the noise throughàI just want to make sure, so when I go back to them, I have more ammoàunder the 2nd boot, theres the big hole for the tranny shifters to come through. If there is an additional boot, whatÆs the part #à
I know itÆs in the tranny and they have to crack it open again, but this is their argumentàI told them if thatÆs the case I could just turn up my stereoà
IÆm thinking it has something to do with the input shaftà

Okay... In the SR5 case, there is 3 boots (1 leather, 2 rubber). All three boots have two holes, one for each shifter and they just act as layers. If the truck has a body lift, it is almost certain that the bottom boot is gone. I don't the know part numbers.
I would suspect the noise could be the throw out bearing.

cool thanks...yes it is body lifted, so that's why it's gone...i went to the dealer and looked at their schematics? and couldn't find the 2nd leather boot? cause of the body lift, i cannot use it? or is this something that doesn't have to be replaced?

I think you mean you couldn't find the second rubber boot. Anyway, it doesn't really matter, because the second boot is too contrictive with the BL. When the BL is added the floorboard is higher up on the shifters and now they have a larger range of motion than before. I tried cutting mine to fit and then just destroyed them. One possibility I have heard of is to invert them, so the rubber boot is going down toward the tranny and not up in the cab. I haven't tried this so it may not work. I have used heavy rubber from a hardware store and it cuts down on the noise a bit, but still not perfect.

yeah rubber, i'm stupid...
so this is a rubber boot that goes under the other rubber boot with the accordian like things for the 2 shifters...it should go between that and the floorboard? also, what's it look like? cause with the rubber boot i have, the stick holes won't line up if i tried to install upside down...

inside out doesn't work for the rubber boots. I have nothing but the leather boot, which isn't good when you drive through high water, and my truck sounds kinda like it has a big rig turbo the way it whines as I accelerate or try and put it in 1st gear goin too fast. It's kinda neat since the car I had before this was turbo charged...it makes me at least sound like I still have one. Ryan
EDIT: AND NEVERMIND...I just realized I posted in the T100 board...well I have a Tacoma...so I'm really not sure what the deal is with t100s but the tacoma shift boot doesn't turn inside out like people say...and I'm assuming they are quite similar.
