Getting the Wheeling Fever
Morning all,

I have an '85 4Runner and I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I just bought the truck and the tires are brand new BFG 33x10.5's. I'm not sure of the wheels but they don't even stick out of the factory fenders (actually looks very strange, kinda narrow and tipsy).

I'm having a problem with the left tire almost or touching the leaf spring when I turn the wheel all the way to the left. So I was thinking of either putting some spacers on the axles (don't want to, use it 60/40 dd/off-road) or get some new wheels which offset the tires. I want the wider stance anyway so I'm not concerned about the tires extending beyond the fender (that's what they made fender flares for right?).

So here's my question, if I get new wheels, I'd like to get some that will offset my current set up enough to eliminate the leaf spring problem. But I'd also want a wheel which could handle a wider tire, say 12.5" in the future.

Any suggestions?

Justin

Body Damage is Cool
Get rims with 2" backspacing, yours are probably the common 3.75" BS, or get 1.5" spacers, or set your steering stops so the current setup doesn't hit the leafs.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thanks for putting up with a newbie. I'm really excited to get into this whole 4Runner scene.

I think I'll just set the steering stops for now once I figure out how that's done. I have the repair manual so it should clue me in on how to do that.

I'll keep the wheel backspacing in mind when I go to purchase some new wheels. I'm not going to mess with wheel spacers after hearing about the bolts loosening making it unsafe for daily driving.

Thanks again,

Justin

Yeah, Its the backspacing.. You might also find that when your rear tire are tucked they will rub on the frame, wich will restricted your rear wheel travel.Thats how it was on my 85 4runner. You can probably find some basic steel "rockcrawler" rims whith 2 in. backspacing for about $50 a piece. As far as your steering stops go,I would leave it the way it is.I know its an option but I think that you could use all the turning radius you can get. Just my 2 cents.... If you have any more questions about your truck feel free to pm me <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
