Problem replacing rotors on 2000 Taco TRD #507261 09/28/04 11:16 PM

I've got a 2000 Taco PreRunner TRD and am having a problem getting the rotors off. I took off the tire and caliper and just can't seem to get the rotors off. It looks like it should just slide off. I banged on it a few times with a hammer, but it won't budge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You have to remove the whole hub assembly from the axle by removing the grease cap from the center of the outer hub, then the cotter pin and bearing nut. There are 5 bolts that hold the rotor to the back of the hub; they are evenly spaced between the wheel lugs. I suggest breaking the rotor bolts loose before removing the hub assembly. If you need more help give me a good e-mail address and I'll send a copy of the page from the manual.

John, thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not sure my rotor is set up that way. I read that same thing in the Haynes manual but my assembly doesn't look like what they show there. I do have what looks like a cap in the middle of the hub, but it doesn't stick out, like is shows in the manual. It is actually recessed into the hub and I tried prying it off, but I couldn't get it off, there's no lip of any kind to pry underneath, so I'm not sure it's supposed to come off. And, there are no other bolts sticking out between the lug nuts. I'm not really sure what's going on here, does this make sense? Thanks!

You have floating rotors. Once you remove the brake caliper, they SHOULD just fall off. If not, then they're corroded to the hub. Just take a good sized hammer and give them a swift whack from behind and they'll fall off. I'm assuming you're going to replace them. If not, then you might wanna use a piece of wood as a cushion so you don't damage the surface of the rotor. Good luck and be careful. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />
