Getting the Wheeling Fever
When I go over a ridge or bump in the road, I feel a knock in the steering wheel. I am thinking this may be a sway bar that is loose and worn. Any other considerations? Safety considerations? Are they easy to replace? Can anyone refer me to the procedure?

Thanks in advance

Sway bars are easy to replace, at least they are on my '85, dont' know what year you have. But I used to have a knocking just as you described, but it turned out that my front leaves were bad, sort of sparating from each other.

Bushings are easy to replace, two on the bar itself that hold it to the frame and then the end link bushings on the end links. Remove the bar (watch the small bolts that hold the bar clamps to the frame, they seem to like to break or strip if rusted), replace the bushings and reinstall the bar.

It could be a whole bunch of things. What year is your rig? There are different things to check depending on whether it's IFS or straight axle.

When my IFS steering got real sloppy I replaced the idler arm bushing and it made a huge difference. I also replaced worn tie rod ends and ball joints. Try checking all those things, in addition to your sway bar.

I have a 95 4Runner V6. She has 238,000 kms on it. I've replaced the upper ball joints, the idler arm and front wheel bearings.

I sure am worried about our beautiful Canadian winter salt conditions making huge issues when pulling it apart with rust. I can't believe how bad it can get. We'll see.

Thanks
