My alternator quit charging last night. Typical Charge & Battery light came on and I am only getting 11.88 volts with truck running. I did a search and found this part number:

Toyota Part # 27370-35060, HOLDER S/A, $11.37+ tax
(a complete brush holder sub-assembly)

It was listed for a 86-89 Toyota Alternator, does anybody know if it is the same part # for an 85. If nobody knows for sure I guess I will find out tomorrow.

normaly the brushes are the same. i have used brushes from a 86 cresida on my 93 celica and they also are the same on my 87 runner. try it! better than a $180. alternator.

Replying to my post for future searches. The answer is yes Toyota Part # 27370-35060 does work on an 85 Alternator.

My brushes only had about 3mm of material left. Minimum exposed length according to the FSM is 4.5mm.

My '86 has 145,000 on it. This sounds like good preventitive maintenance. Don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere!

yeah that sounds like a better idea than what i did. mine just quit so i replaced it with one from K-nex 91 bucks, the first one they gave wasnt even the rigth one, it died after about three days and the second one which was the right one for a change still works but cuts out occasionally on my way home. my electrical system has got to be posessed by demon or something! good luck with yours

Any of you when your alternator was on the way out, have an idle problem? like the alternator wasnt pushing enough charge to cause propper voltage for ignition? Resulting in a rough idle when lights and stuff where on.

One thing you should do when you reassemble the alternator is use anti seize compound on the long steel bolts that hold the unit together.. i.e. the ones that goes through the width of the alternator and thread into the aluminum shell..

I didn't the first time I replaced the brushes on an alternator, and when I did it the second time I had to drill the bolts out as they seized very tightly in the aluminum housing..

My brush holder was $14.37 DC prices

94SVT5.0- I had no problems like you mentioned with my idle.
