So the rear window on my 84 Runner will go up using the key in the lock, but won't go down. No problem when using the inside switch up front. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Rear Window troubleshooting page... Ohm out the switch and see if it is making contact then see if the switch signal is making it to the relay then see if the relay is working.

Thanks 4crawler! I'm starting with the wiring loom in the drivers side rear storage since that's easiest & the wire colors for up & down were identified in MALLRunner story (blue/blk completes the up, blue/wht completed down). I was able to find the wires so if I test while my wife turns the key in the lock I should get 12v? Sorry but I'm just learning the electrical stuff.

You'll need to study the wiring diagram on my page. You'll see that the swiches all work off of ground, that is they ground various connections to the relay module. You'll see the voltage go to 0 when the switch closes. What you can do is compare what the switches that work do to what the ones that don't and use that to help diagnose the problem. Or use an ohm (resistance) meter or test light and check out the continuity between the switch and the relay.

Ok when you turn the key to the left the voltage on the blue/blk wire drops to zero & the window goes up. When you turn the key to the right the voltage on the blue/wht wire does not change & the window does nothing. So does this mean the problem is between the plug in the storage area where I'm testing and the switch at the key? Do I need to pull the back door apart now to get to the switch area around the key? Thanks Again!

Well that basically says the signal from the switch is not reaching the relay, so its somewhere in the wiring, connector(s), or the switch itself. Probably next step is to remove the door panel and see if the switch itself is working (i.e. measure for 0 resistance between the contacts). If that works, then its the connector or wiring, otherwise its the switch.

Good place to look for the problem is in the tailgate itself. These switches seem to boogered right at the backside of the switch...could be a corroded or broken wire. Second place is where the harness comes into the tailgate. Wire chaffing over the years takes its toll. I got my junk working with a few long nights tracing the entire frickin circuit. Some burnt fingers from doing the soldering repairs...but results were a fully functioning 4Runner.

Thanks for all the help on this. The bad wire was between the switch connection and the plug in the storage area. 4crawler I really appreciate the electrical lesson and link to the write up's. It just didn't make sense before!

No problem, glad you found the problem. I've updated my page with a bit more troubleshooting info. based upon this thread: Rear Window Troubleshooting

Second place is where the harness comes into the tailgate. Wire chaffing over the years takes its toll. This is where I need to look more in depth. My rear key switch doesn't work in either direction but it checked out good. The two main wires running between the switch plug and relay pack have no continuity though. I've been dreading pulling the interior apart to replace these wires for years, maybe I ought to get off my butt and check the more easily replaced section first <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
