im possibly looking to buy a 4runner , and i really want the year that had the spare on the outside of the tailgate . which years were they ? and did they have the 3.0 v-6 or only 4 cly ?

I believe that was the 1990 model year. I'm also pretty sure that it was available with the 3.0. Toyota also had a two-door 2nd Gen 4Runner for a year or so around that time.

I seem to recall it was 1990 and 1991. According to my parts guys the rack cannot be added to newer years because the reinforcement isn't there.

There's an 86 and 87 Runner in the junkyard here that have external tire racks on 'em; look stock. No place inside for 'em.

We bought a new '90 4Runner with the outside spare. It was a SR5 V6 4x4. I believe the option went away after '91 or '92 though. Ours rattled and squeeked over every bump. I tried to use felt tape, grease, etc in the latch area to stop the movement, but the noise was always there. I would guess that is why Toyota went away from it.
