NC,
The pictures are excellent. I plan on rebuilding my extra engine and will be using the shots to supplement the shop manual.
Question:
What did you use to clean off the engine (aside from elbow grease :-) )

No elbow grease here and havn;t cleaned an engin eby hand for 10 years or more. The only thing I clean by hand are the fasteners, and odd small parts. The company that does your machining work should have killer cleaning equipment. My comes out nearly clean enough to eat on. I take everything down there, even stuff that isn't getting machined like the oil pan. Comes out really amazingly clean.

The shop I use doesn't charge extra for cleaning extra parts as long as the whole lot is still just one load in the machine and you are having a reasonably full suite of engine machining services done. Even if all they do is clean the head and cut valve seats they should be willing to clean the whole engine for a reasonable charge; maybe $40-$75.

Clean an engine once by hand, and then see an engine cleaned for free or for $40 by machine and you will NEVER do it by hand again.

By the way, the machine is really neat. Just like a huge dish washing machine for engines. The cleaner that runs through the machine is heated and everyhing, just like a dishwasher. They run it for hours as opposed to 30 minutes though.

A couple or three new pictures are at my engine rebuilding photo album.

The status of my project is: 99% complete. I am waiting for a few parts that I should get in tomorrow, and then I install the engine. At that point, I have one more part that I am waiting on and then I should be able to fire it up. Beside the assembly work you see in the photos, I have have done the following since the last photos:

  • Had the radiator cleaned and tested(the radiator shop I use paints it too).
  • Welded the cracks in the exhaust shield and painted it
  • Sandblasted and then painted the exh. manifold.
  • Had several more items cleaned at the machine shop before being put on the engine. Since the subject was brought up before, I mention that it cost $10

That's it for now.

All I have to say is the engine really looks great and is very clean. That is pretty much putting in a brand new engine into your Trooper. The results should be excellent when you do first drive it. I'd have to say you would be pulling down at least 30 MPG also since everything is new. And your power is going to be good too, after using a K&N air filter, you'll probably be around 85-90 HP. Isuzu diesel engines are awesome! Keep up the great work and good luck with the remaining project.

I'm sure you must be a little anxious to hear it run. Confidence with a dash of apprehension thrown in, at the first turn of the key. It's always nice to hear/see/feel the fruits of your labour.
It won't be long before the ol' Trooper is rollin down the road once again.
Nice job. Keep us posted! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The promised pictures have been added to my engine rebuilding photo album.

Tranny is mounted up but I am a software consultant (C++/Perl/php programmer for various companies) by trade, not a mechanic and I am involved with a project that is going to keep me out of the shop for a few days. I only have 2-3 more hours of work to fire it up but I am afraid that I will have to leave on a trip almost immediately after I finish this this one 2-3 day project and I won't get more than 2 minutes to rub together before next Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed for me. It would be a real shame if I had to wait another week or more before I could fire it up.

I'll keep you folks up to date and in the loop as usual,

Man, Ive been getting such a kick out of watching you rebuild this motor. If I lived close enough, I'd come over and give you moral support !! :>)
I'm going to have to do it at some point next year on a motor I have with 275k on it. First I have to build the garage to do the work in... I've been getting the equipment together. I picked up an engine hoist, an engine stand, etc. I used to have my own body and collision shop back in the 80's and saved all my tools.

Looking at you standing next to your truck, there is a panel up on the wall behind you. Is that a fender off a 65 Chevy or is it a Corvair rear quarter panel?

I would like to hear everyones's favortie method for priming a newly built engine with oil. In my ag engines, I just use a syringe (sans the needle) in an oil line fitting close to the oil pump and I do this to just prime the pump. Then I keep the fuel/spark off and let the starter prime and then build oil pressure. I would like to hear some ideas from everyone else though.

Jerry suggested a pressurized container and feed the whole engine, but the engine is in the truck and getting to a good fiting for doing that would be tough.

As for an update: Finally, after a 2-3+ week exile from the shop because of work, Thanksgiving, etc. I put in the long day needed to finish the engine rebuild. But I didn't finish )-; - I am missing a hose clamp and the radiator mounting bolts and I don't have the right size of either anywhere. Oh well, its 1:30 in the morning so I won't be going out to the store and get any. Guess I'll fire up will be tomorrow if I can get to the store and then sneak in a hour or two of shop time. I need to connect the driveshafts and a few other small things too. Very close to firing it up!

ummmm Isn't the engineoil pump already submerged in the oil pan? I woul dnot think "priming"it woul dbe necessary unless I am misunderstanding what you are geting at.
