My Rodeos still at Predator while they await a return call from Tera concerning the ticking sound they are hearing after installing my Tera Lows. Is there anybody here who has done the install, or had it done on a 2nd gen who has had this problem and can lead me in the right direction ? Its the 307L-A kit.

Dale

After installing my Tera's, they wined a good bit. Really loud the first couple of days. But over the first week, they were not so bad. The reason for this if because the gears that were in there had worn together. And the Tera gear is a brand new cut gear. Over time they will wear together. Suggestion, don't use a senthetic motor oil in the transfer case until it does get quiet enough to suit you. I am only guessing that this is what you are hearing, but it sounds like the problem. Good Luck

What position is the transfercase lever in when you hear the ticking? Or does it do it all the time in all gears?

Have them check and make sure they put the snap ring on the back of the idler gear that will hold it into the front half of the t-case. If this snap ring isn't in place the snap ring itself could be causing the ticking noise you are hearing. This snap ring was a pain to put in. If they haven't got it in, tell them to use a small zip tie to hold it compressed and get it in place and then cut the zip tie.

But we shouldn't have to tell a shop how to do things.

Joe

On second thought there is also a little ball detent that holds the bearing race on the input shaft of the transfer case. If they didn't know about that ball it could have dropped down into the case. I'd think it'd be the snap ring though.

Thanks Charles and Joe,

Shop says the tick happens in all gears 2wd and 4wd. It shifts but makes noise. I havent heard the noise personally yet but I will be going back tomorrow morning to hear it firsthand. I also want to see the case open so I can understand it better.

this is a known fact. it basically has to do with there are only a handful of machines that can cut a "quiet" gear. these are usually reserved for the big OEM manufactors. not something companies like Tera have access to. so without mega bucks, its impossible to cut a truely quiet gear.

But as its been said, the whining will be better as things wear in through temperature and time. but doubtful it will ever go away.

there is certainly a difference between whining and ticking. sounds like you have a different problem. ticking = bad.

Thanks Rob

Like I said I need to hear the noise for myself to see if it really is a tick or just the whine that has been mentioned here before. Apparently Tera is stumped also. Of course once its fixed, fingers crossed, I will post the results.

Now Teras sending the shop another whole kit for them to install - it seems that one of the gears isnt cut correctly for my model - and they want to research the original kit for why this happened. I'm hoping they get the kit tomorrow and have enough ttime to put it in that day. Drivin the wifes 4Runner aint so bad, I just dont like the seats !!!!

Once again, i have to commend Tera for good customer service. Its apparent they are really concerned on resolving customer problems to the best of their ability.

I agree, Tera is good to us. The problem isnt with Tera its apparently an anomoly from their gear cutters. Let me see if I can expalin this and not confuse anyone or myself. The new gear was cut wrong, the inner diameter is cut with a shelf in it and it was cut at the wrong height. Its was off enough to cause the gear to rattle/move, not really a tick, on the rod, when its supposed to be a flush fit with the neighboring gear. So hopefully I can wheel this weekend, if the new kit shows up in time tomorrow. I am dissappointed but I cant complain, caca happens. And both Tera and Predator have been more than helpful in trying to remedy the situation.

Hmmmmm ...... now which front locker to get ........ <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

i assume you are talking about the 4wd gear? as opposed to the idler/counter gear (these are the only 2 gear Tera replaces).

i'm not sure i follow you on the "flush fit with the neighboring gear", but glad you were able to identify the problem and get it correct.
