I have a 97 SR5 with original factory locker (rear). The unit has always performed flawlessly until last week. When I engage the locker switch, the Diff Lock light flashes on the dash but the locker never engages and the light never switches to solid. I've tried all variations of engaging it, have tried speeding up, slowing down, turning at acute angles, and going over some serious bumps to try to get it to engage--no luck.
Any thoughts on how to diagnose the problem?
Thanks
George

You are in 4-lo right? I believe it blinks if you're in 4 hi and try to engage it.
Just a thought

have you driven through deep water lately? Sometimes the electronics go haywire when introudced to moisture. There may be corrosion at the connectors on the diff as well. Otherwise you could put the truck on jackstands to troubleshoot the locker...

Thanks. No deep water. Will put it up on the lift this weekend and check connections, clean etc. Cost to replace is $$$ so I am hoping to fix/rebuild.

Check to see if the breather hose is still in the upward position. The clip on the end of mine broke, so the breather was laying flat on top of the axle housing, rain water got in. When I applied power to the diff lock, it progressively got slower, then wouldn't lock anymore. I pulled it apart, regreased it like others recommended, but it still didn't work. My guess is the motor fried. Toyota only stocks the actuator assembly...$520 or so on discount!! Right now, I'm locker-less....can't afford to spend that kind of money. At least it's in the unlocked position, so the vehicle is driveable.

You can try pulling the motor/actuator off the diff (it's real easy)- leaving the wires plugged in - flip the diff lock switch - if the motor turns - you know the motor is fine. Mine was gummed up and wouldn't turn at all when I tried the above procedure.
With the motor off - there is a hole in the diff (where the motor arm goes in) you should see some teeth of a slide gear (sorry don't know the real names) that slides left and right - which is what locks and unlocks the diff. Use a scredriver and slide it to the left - that should lock the diff. If yuo can lock it mannual - then I'm not sure what the problem is.
