I am supposed to be getting a new long-bed Tundra in a couple of days and would like input on the best soft tonneau cover. Over the years, I've had caps (toppers) and they are very useful, but I find them to be ugly. Also a pain to remove. My T100 has a hard fiberglass bed cover which is very nice looking, but again, taking it off is more than a minor inconvenience. I believe that there are soft covers that mount to a frame that hinges in the front, which sounds like the best of both worlds. Obviously, a soft cover has no security at all, but that's not a concern.

Do soft covers seal adequately against rain?

Can they be mounted without any drilling?

Are there reasons NOT to buy the sort that has a hinged frame?

What type is most convenient to live with?

Thanks for any information.

I don't know much as far as the soft covers go, but...what I plan on doing if I don't go the cap route is a roll-top. They take up about 10 or 12 inches of the bed up front where they mount, they're resonably secure, seal well against water from what I've seen, and do a good job. They have locks, and you use em or ya dont. Most mount flush or almost so with the rails so it's hard to tell they're there is you're looking from the side.

I know BAK Makes one, Pace-Edwards, Retrax ( Website) makes a nice one. I found that is well priced (cheaper) from Peragon. I think Access makes a few different kinds. A google search will yield many results, and I gave a couple the links I know.

My personal opinion is the retractable ones. I like having a hard surface there which you just can't get with some of the vinyl ones. Anyway, just my two cents.

The Peragon looked good until I checked their application chart and saw that they don't make one for the long bed.

I did a Google search and after about two hours of looking at the offerings just about went blind. Every manufacturer claims to have the "best" system. My hope was that someone on the board could say "I've used this for two years and it's great" or "Bought this one and it's nothing but trouble".

The main thing I see wrong with the retractable systems (except for the Peragon, which isn't made for mine) is that now I'd have this big chunk of rolled-up metal sitting in the top front of my bed all the time, maybe interfering with a stack of drywall. I'm guessing that most do not easily come out of the bed after installation.

I didn't get a chance to look through them myself. That does suck.

As far as quality. I think they're all going to be just like the next. I am sure someone will chime in with more specifics though.

As far as removeable. I had my bed Line-X'd a while ago, and the dealer for Line0X had a retractable cover on the office floor and it claimed to be removable. From what I gather, it did physically attach the container that holds the cover and stuff to the rails that it runs in, just a gasket. So it could be unbolted and pulled pretty quick like.

They might not interfere with drywall depending on how high up you stack it. I know for sure most of them don't go down to the floor of the bed, and they have a tube that lets the water out, so there is some room under them. And for the longbed...well...I guess the point of that long bed isn't to have 10 or 12 inches taken up from a cover. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Anyway, I'm sure, like I said, someone will chime in and say they've used one or the other. I'd like to hear opinions as well, I'm up in the air between one of those and a cap.

Ooops. See you have a long bed. This is just for the standard bed.

Hopefully they have one for the long bed...
