Doing best to hook up a friend with a Runner. Gen 1 4Runners are rare this time of year up here it seems. Passed up many good deals this summer, even a pristine '85 SR5. I should have bought it! Found him a clean '90 but with 4 cyl. auto.
Anyway is it possible to convert it to a 5 speed? I would think it should be all bolt on but I may be wrong.
I am guessing it would already have either 4:56 or 4:88 which would be a plus.
I know it's heavier than 84-89 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />, but need opinions please.
Thanks,
Hugh

it is swappable. but it is not all bolt on. its a ***** to do. nither my friend or i knew what was going on when we turned his 91 pickup into a 5 speed, but there was wiring involved too. we were flying by the seat of our pants though.

the only part that isn't a bolt-on is cutting holes for the shifters, and jumping the neutral safety wires in the tranny

Auto to stick is totally do-able. I did it myself a while ago. It isn't too difficult but it does take some time.
Here is a great thread about the swap, with more info than you'll want.

Well, found an '89 4Runner no-rust 22RE Auto SR5 for my buddy. This is what he really wanted, 1Gen. We are forgetting about the '90 for now. However we seem to be stuck with an auto's for some resason.
Does anyone out there have a firts generation 4Runner with Auto / 22RE combo?
What gearing did they come with? This may still be a viable option if the truck really is as clean as seller says. The tranny could always be changed out at a later time.

Thanks for the excellent link to the older thread by the way BigBri, very informative. I posted as well above, curious about gear ratio used on that combo.

it'll have 4.30 gears compared to the 4.10s that a 5 speed would have.

later years also had 4.56(31" tires and 5 speed stock) and 4.88(31" tires and auto) available from the factory

I thought it had 4:10's, but it could have been 4:30's as Kyle said. Mine was a turbo though, so the truck behaves differently than one with a normally aspirated motor. Less bottom end torque, and more top end. Mine with 31's and the auto was a ***DOG*** off the line. 0-20mph in 4-5 seconds! But with the 5-speed it would pull off the line well, then take off when the turbo kicked in.

IMHO, a 5-speed, 4:10s and 31's should work just fine.

Good luck,
Brian.

Thanks guys! Yes THE PLAN is to eventually go with a 5 Sp. , 2" BL and 31's so this would work fine for now. Better to get a clean straight auto rust free truck and rustproof as much as possible now.
Mechanically anything can be done / modded later with less time / expense. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/coolg.gif" alt="" />
