Rebuilding the tranny is about $1,750, replacing with a 40,000 mile inspected, steam cleaned & warranteed salvage yard tranny is about $1,400. Which route would you go?

Heck, I've seen an auto (a340f) out of a 4runner go on ebay for $400... Keep shopping; You've got to be able to beat that price. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The price of the tranny is actually $895 the rest is shipping plus taking out the existing tranny and putting in the new. My mechanic thought that was a pretty fair price for a tranny w/ 40k miles, inspected, steam cleaned and warranteed. Sounds like maybe I can do better, maybe the guy selling it will bargain with me some.
Bottom line is that rebuilding my existing tranny is bloody expensive. Is it worth the extra $500 to get my existing tranny rebuilt or would I be better off getting a low mileage used tranny?

send it to marlin to get rebuilt. was that your plan? you can remove it and install it yourself. it is not too hard. replace the clutch while you are there.

I appreciate your confidence that I can remove and reinstall the tranny as well as replacing the clutch. Some time ago I came to the realization that I have virtually no mechanical skills so I'm not going to even attempt this one. Given my position, would you rebuild or replace?

I think I would go with rebuild. One out of a salvage yard is a big question on what kind of life its had. You could wind up paying for it to be removed and rebuilt in another 40k. Good luck.

The rebuild will probably come with some kind of waranty whereas the one from the junkyard probably wont...

Junkyard tranny has 40k miles on it and has 90 day unlimited miles warranty. Rebuild has 1 year warranty.

I've got 196,000 on the original tranny and clutch. Only pops out of gear occasionally. I figure it's about time to at least do the clutch. I'll check the tranny at the same time.
