I'm glad you got everything squared away, Rob. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

You gotta preserve that rare piece of Isuzu culture we call the RS. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

update...

well, after i got past the momentary brain lapse that was the switched plug wires, and have since solved the cooling issues which probably caused the overheating and cracked head in the first place, i'm still plagued by yet another problem and i can't seem to get past it....

the Trooper starts, runs and idles just fine, cold. however, once things warm up a bit, there is a periodic 'squeel' or 'squeek' that comes from the valve train (or at least i think), though idle remains normal. the squeeks will increase a bit with RPM, but aren't constant. the sound isn't like valve tap to me (of course, my only experience being Chevy 350s), but for some reason, i do think its coming from the valvetrain.

Now, i've always had this since first firing with the new head and cam. I've have adjusted valves (set at 8/10) and checked til my knuckles are bloody. i have also gone back and 'clearanced' the little rocker shims/retainers for the extra lift of the delta cam so they are clear from the path of the rockers (i read about this issue w/ Delta cam installs).... noise is still there.

any ideas? doesn't sound like the valves are out of adjustment, but maybe i'm wrong?

Where did you read about it?...as i also have a freshly installed Delta cam and I'm wondering about how other people dealt with the retainer issue.

Rob-

I am shooting in the dark here, but here are some ideas:

Vac leak?

Exhaust leak? These engines can make some funny noises when they have exhaust leaks.

Accessories? Bad idler on A/C? If you have it.

Air pump?

Loose nut behind the wheel? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Delta cam settings for the anal

I first made no modification to the retainers. I thought for the sure the rockers making contact with these was the cause of my noise. So last night, i removed them and sure enough there were signs of contact on the "shorter" retainers. So i clearanced these by bending them so there was no possible contact. and then much to my dismay, the noise remained.

Vac leak?
all hoses are accounted for and we replaced many worn ones when reassembling the intake. i spend enough time looking at these lines to say pretty confidently i know all are accounted for.

Exhaust leak?
well, i got one big one right now, as the downpipe basically crumbled under its own weight when removed from the head (pretty rusty). so needless to say, the trooper is loud right now. but the squeeking noise is definitely heard over the exhaust and seems to come directly from the engine bay, not under the car.

Accessories? Bad idler on A/C? If you have it.
I thought about this. in fact, the only other thing i had in my list to try was starting the truck with all belts removed to rule out any possible problems with accessories. i'll probably do that tonight. yes, we do have a/c.

Loose nut behind the wheel? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
you just couldn't resist, could you! I'm sure once this is all figured out, it will once again be something incrediably simple that will give you more ammo against me! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the advice though, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

just because he's one of our moderators, you don't have to kiss <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> Daniel. you know, it only causes his behavior to worsen! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

i'm sure you've checked, but i've crossed a couple of wires more than once when working on my 2.6, and it'll do exactly as your described.

6th reply, page 1 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" /> can't say i can offer anything helpful on the current problem though...
